Scotland Our Union Street
This community-led project is a collaboration between Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen Inspired and Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce. Established in March 2023, the aim is to make Union Street a more vibrant and attractive location for businesses, residents and visitors. With financial support from partners, Our Union Street has engaged with the community and listened to feedback; harnessed public support through volunteer street cleaning and shopfront refreshing; and recently launched a website which advertises all vacant units on Union Street with tenant-friendly information.
UK Government investment in the North East Coastal communities in the north of Aberdeenshire are benefiting from a host of infrastructure projects. In March 2024, Peterhead was awarded £20 million, due to be delivered over 10 years, from the UK Government’s Long-Term Plan for Towns programme, which will focus on locally-identified priorities. A Town Board has been established comprising councillors, community leaders, cultural and sporting organisations, public sector agencies and local businesses to develop a long-term plan for the town.
Investment in culture and heritage continue to play a critical role in the region. In 2023, Aberdeenshire Council was awarded £20 million from the UK Government’s which is going towards the refurbishment and expansion of Macduff’s Marine Aquarium and the development of a cultural quarter in Peterhead, including a new Museum of Aberdeenshire and Peterhead Library.
Macduff Marine Aquarium The award-winning Macduff Marine Aquarium is set to receive an extension and upgrade to its facilities, inspired by the coastal location and Macduff’s rich shipbuilding heritage. These improvements will boost the aquarium’s potential and significantly enhance the visitor experience.
Among the many upgrades being made, the distinctive round building will be expanded to accommodate increased display and activity space and will feature a café-restaurant on the second floor boasting magnificent views. Education and conservation are at the heart of the aquarium’s operations and the expansion will provide space for a lobster hatchery and a dedicated learning room to allow hands on activities and events for learners of all ages.
Peterhead’s Regeneration Journey
Further south in Peterhead, ambitious plans are being developed for a new Museum of Aberdeenshire and Peterhead Library, centred around the vacant Arbuthnot House. The B-listed Arbuthnot House will be sensitively restored and linked to a new extension to house both the town’s library and new museum, showcasing Aberdeenshire’s extensive heritage collections and artwork.
Live Life Aberdeenshire, who will be operating the new museum, are engaging with residents and communities across the Shire on the future of
Union Terrace Gardens
the new development, including potential exhibitions, displays and activities, catering and retail offers.
The new attraction will be the council’s first shire-wide museum and will provide many opportunities for local communities across Aberdeenshire to learn about the region’s heritage. Multi-purpose and workshop spaces will support participation and learning. A new dedicated exhibition gallery will accommodate both temporary and touring national exhibitions, and also act as a functions space for individual and corporate events.
The new space will provide representation to the ever-changing people and places that have made, and continue to make, Aberdeenshire what it is today.
Meanwhile, Aberdeenshire Council is embarking on a search for a new operator of the iconic Carnegie Building in the heart of Peterhead. Forming the original home of the town’s Public Library and Arbuthnot Museum, the St Peter Street property will shortly undergo a major conservation restoration as part of the wider Cultural Quarter project. The Carnegie Building will then become available as a new venue offering the opportunity to cultural entrepreneurs, creative third sector organisations or social enterprises to find an inspiring place to deliver their creative vision.
