project aimed at creating a sustainable, high-tech business and living environment. This initiative includes advanced research and development facilities, as well as incubators for tech startups. Furthermore, we are leveraging our strong industrial heritage to transition into green technologies, particularly in the chemicals and petrochemicals sectors. Our aim is to be at the forefront of Scotland’s move towards a low-carbon economy.

Sustainability is indeed the future. Can you tell us more about Falkirk’s efforts in promoting a green economy?

Paul Kettrick: Falkirk is committed to sustainability, which is evident in our Green Investment Plan. This plan outlines significant investments in renewable energy projects, waste management solutions, and sustainable transport systems. For instance, the Helix Park project, home to the iconic Kelpies, not only boosts tourism but also serves as a model for environmental stewardship with its renewable energy initiatives and extensive green spaces. Additionally, we are working on transforming the Grangemouth industrial complex into a hub for circular economy practices, which will further enhance our sustainability credentials.

That’s very forward-thinking. How do you see the future of Falkirk in terms of growth and development?

Falkirk has recently been highlighted as a prime location for investment. What makes Falkirk stand out in today’s competitive market?

Paul Kettrick: Falkirk indeed is an exciting hub for investment right now. Its strategic location at the heart of Scotland offers unparalleled connectivity, with easy access to the major cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. This prime positioning, combined with robust infrastructure and a supportive business environment, makes Falkirk exceptionally attractive for investors.

Infrastructure and connectivity are crucial. Can you elaborate on the specific advantages that Falkirk’s infrastructure provides?

Paul Kettrick: Falkirk is serviced by a comprehensive transport network that includes the M9 motorway, linking it to the rest of the UK, and two major rail lines that ensure efficient commuting and freight movement. Moreover, the nearby Grangemouth port, Scotland’s largest container port, opens up extensive international trade opportunities. This connectivity significantly reduces logistics costs and times, which is a substantial advantage for businesses.

That’s impressive. How is Falkirk supporting new and existing businesses to thrive in this environment?

Paul Kettrick: Falkirk Council has implemented several initiatives to foster a pro-business climate. We offer financial incentives, such as business grants and tax reliefs, and provide practical support through our Business Gateway service. This service includes everything from startup advice and development workshops to networking opportunities and mentorship programs. Additionally, our planning and economic development teams work closely with businesses to ensure smooth project implementations and expansions.

Innovation seems to be a key focus in many regions today. How is Falkirk positioning itself as a leader in innovation?

Paul Kettrick: Innovation and Place is at the core of our £150m Falkirk Growth Deal and The Forth Green Freeport. Furthermore, we are home to the Falkirk Gateway, a significant development

Paul Kettrick: The future of Falkirk is incredibly bright. We are poised for significant growth, driven by our strategic investment programme and the resilience of our business community. Over the next decade, we anticipate substantial developments in sectors like manufacturing, logistics, technology, and tourism. With our focus on innovation and sustainability, we are not just preparing for growth; we are ensuring that it is inclusive and beneficial for the entire community. Falkirk is set to become a leading economic powerhouse in Scotland, offering tremendous opportunities for investors and residents alike.

It’s clear that Falkirk is a dynamic place with a lot to offer. Any final thoughts for potential investors considering Falkirk?

Pau Kettrick: I would say to any potential investors that now is the perfect time to be part of Falkirk’s transformation. The opportunities here are vast and varied, supported by a dedicated council and a thriving business ecosystem. We are not just looking for investors; we are looking for partners who share our vision for sustainable growth and innovation. Together, we can achieve great things in Falkirk.

How will the recent Petroineos announcement impact the local economy, and what opportunities does it present for economic growth and job creation in the region?

Paul Kettrick: While the recent announcement was a blow to the area, we see it as a major opportunity for developments in sustainable energy production that can bolster the local economy. Investment in cleaner energy technologies aligns with the region’s commitment to decarbonisation and job creation. By modernising and focusing on sustainable practices, we can attract new industries, creating a cluster effect that can draw in new businesses, support suppliers, and drive innovation in green energy. For local workers, this initiative is expected to open up opportunities in skilled trades and new energy sectors, providing a pathway for upskilling and long-term employment. The regional economy can benefit from both direct job creation and indirect growth across supporting industries. In addition, this positions the region as a hub for low-carbon technology, attracting further investment, and aligning with broader economic goals such as those outlined in the Falkirk and Grangemouth Growth Deal, Forth Green Freeport and the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal.
