The economic campus will bolster an already strong public sector presence in the town, with Student Finance England, Disclosure and Barring Service and Department for Education employing hundreds of people.
The long-term aim is that Darlington will become the North’s ‘Little London’, a thriving hub of public and private role, financial and
professional services supporting the
Government and the economic campus. The unique mix of independent and well-
with
the
known shops in Darlington make it a vibrant place for visitors and residents alike. From traditional bakers to award winning unique fashion houses and jewellery designers, supporting and promoting local independent shops is a real priority. The redevelopment of the Victorian market hall is continuing with plans to develop designer boutiques and artisan stalls as part of its multi-million- pound makeover, which has already seen the popular food hall and performance space open. The town centre also boasts a vibrant night life and has recently been awarded the Purple Flag recognising the safe and thriving night-time economy. Investment in the events programme means a wide range of family
friendly free events are provided throughout the year which draw crowds of all ages to the Market Square.
In the last few years, further regeneration investments have continued to improve the town, helping Darlington to grow and succeed as a place.
At the Head of Steam – Darlington’s Railway Museum, work has now started on the construction of a major national visitor destination which will be at the heart of the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington
Passenger Railway in 2025.
Essential improvements will be carried out on several historically significant buildings on the site, linking them together to create a cluster of attractions including the Skerne Bridge, the oldest working railway bridge in the world. The new Rail Heritage Quarter will be a major boost to Darlington’s visitor economy, where digital and technological investment will bring history to life.
These developments all add to the viability and vibrancy of the town, and as you can see, Darlington really is thriving.
