The North East Darlington – On Track and Going Places

Darlington Town Centre

Darlington – internationally recognised at the birthplace of the public passenger railway – offers a perfect opportunity for businesses to develop and grow.

Darlington’s intrinsic association with the railway is undisputed, with the railway at the towns heart for almost 200 years. Rail has been a major part of Darlington’s economy for over 200 years. Companies based in the town benefit from easy access to the railway with a first-class combination of location, supply chain, skilled workforce and training facilities.

But it’s not just about reflecting on the past – Darlington is a modern, bustling town with new economies, new industries, and new opportunities emerging.

Over recent years, Darlington has enjoyed unprecedented levels of

investment from both the public and private sectors. Against a challenging business and economic backdrop, this North-East town continues to thrive.

Targeted, strategic investments have seen the development of a number of high-quality business parks and facilities suitable for a range of industrial and commercial requirements.

Take Central Park, once abandoned rail sidings, this 30-hectare site is the flagship regeneration project in the town, transforming the area into a new Darlington Science Park, attracting life science, biologics and pharmaceutical enterprises. The overall site combines a mix of commercial research and academic uses. In addition to the education campus, which is home to Darlington College and Teesside University, significant investment has been made with the development of the National Horizons Centre and the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) National Biologics Manufacturing Centre.

CPI’s £38m National Biologics Manufacturing Centre offers 50,000 sq.ft. ‘open access facility’ which helps companies in the biologics market to produce, demonstrate, prototype and scale-up the next-generation of biologic products, as well as processes and technology.

Teesside University’s £22.3m National Horizons Centre has been

purposely created to support the bioscience sector to deliver bespoke higher education provision, collaborative R&D and CPD training.

Whether focussed on research, development, commercialisation, or manufacture, the strong relationship and connections between National Horizons Centre, CPI’s National Biologics Manufacturing Centre, Darlington Borough Council, Teesside University and Darlington College can only enhance the final return on investment in this location. For example, Teesside University has recently announced a new innovation partnership with CPI to lead the growth of the biosciences sector, creating new research, education and collaboration opportunities.

The partnership Business Central 14

will enable staff, students and industry partners to work together drawing upon the industry-leading facilities in Darlington and the north-east.
