ARC EDIT Australian finish- ing house ARC regularly facilitate remote sessions between an agency or directors based in ARC Sydney with ARC talent based in ARC Melbourne. They communicate via Zoom, the editor works on an Avid, whilst the director views the ClearView stream live on a client monitor. The loca- tion doesn’t matter and could easily be reversed. “Honestly, it’s the closest thing to a normal session you can get in these times.” reports EP Daniel Fry. “The director is able to get their choice of editor even though current restrictions were against them. The director/editor relationship is so im- portant for bouncing ideas back and forth. Being able to do that with ClearView dur- ing Covid has been a lifesaver.”


REMOTE EDITING WITH GEAR AT HOME Some productions and post teams have decided to put the workstation at the editor’s home. In this scenario, the editor needs 20 Mbps of consistent upstream bandwidth to their ISP, so they can present real-time views of their stream to their colleagues working elsewhere. The creative can continue to work from their Mac workstation and can leverage the office setup of a desktop screen and a confidence monitor directly out of the home. Security is a different challenge. When content is stored locally (even if being synchronised with the office or cloud), a professional firewall segregating the creative environment from the rest of the house is a requirement. The at-home user will require a setup akin to what they are used to in the office, with two screens – one for the main edit, colour or VFX software and a monitor for the output coming from the local workstation at home. To share a session with other members of their team, they can use ClearView Flex to invite multiple viewers to the session via a web browser for laptops, desktop PCs or Android devices, an iOS app for iPhone/ iPad users, or via the tvOS app for Apple TV users. For viewers, ClearView Flex has no special hardware requirements, no firewall constraints and minimal bandwidth needs – between 1-8 Mbps dependent on the quality setting required for the session, whether your team


members are also located at home or working in the office. The web app used to manage the Flex session invites can be run on any Mac, PC or Chromebook with a modern browser. This can be at any location and does not have to be run on the creative workstation – allowing a secure airgap to be maintained. It’s even better if this is controlled by one of the viewers (e.g. assistant editor, assistant producer) at an external location, as this will lessen the strain on the editor’s home internet connection, already being used to stream the session out to external parties. Whilst this approach to supporting the creative WFH has advantages over remotely connecting to the office setup, it does require a more structured approach to managing both connectivity and security in the home. Getting consistent bandwidth while presenting content in real-time can be challenging at home – with family members competing for access, and consumer-grade providers over- contending their bandwidth. To address this, the home-based creative can install either a second consumer- grade connection dedicated to the home office, or a business-grade connection – either of which can be protected by Sohonet for a small monthly fee with a professionally managed firewall.


REMOTE CREATIVE EXEC REVIEW Our industry tends to gloss over the thousands of creative executives who have


a hand in guiding the output of the creative process. While no longer employing their Wacom tablets, these executives often have strong creative roots in our industry and have the same high-fidelity requirements for colour and video quality to be effective in their roles as those editing, colouring, and creating the images along the way. We recommend two different options for the creative executive working from home, depending on their physical setup. For those rare executives who have a screening room at home where light is controlled, 5.1 or 7.1 sound capabilities are deployed, and the video is either projected with professional grade equipment or a large-format monitor, we recommend ClearView Pivot Lite. However, making image quality at this level work well in real-time requires download bandwidth of 150-200 Mbps for an effective, reliable setup.
