n an industry specialising in
drama, suspense and excitement we’ve had our share of dramatic events that have shaped the way our industry works, including the Writers Guild strike (07-08), the Fukushima LTO tape disaster forcing a shift to digital (2011), Sony Hack (2014) and Meltdown / Spectre (2018). None of these were quite so
dramatic as the rapid departure from studios and offices in March 2020 due to COVID-19. Months on, it’s clear that, for at least the next 9-12 months our industry will be working in a ‘hybrid’ state. While some professionals will begin returning to studios, offices, editing suites, colouring suites, and screening rooms, for many this will not be full time – and many others will remain working from home (WFH) for the long haul. Critical review sessions will be
required for some workflows in colouring/editing suites and screening
rooms, but social distancing will reduce the physical room capacity. As productions resume, they face stringent new working and safety conditions, with restricted crew size, resulting in parallel filming units and off-lot locations for smaller creative teams. Remote collaboration has already
gone through two phases of evolution since the pandemic started. The first phase was characterised by immediate (almost panic) buying, as a wide range of solutions were deployed in the industry. Some worked well. Some failed. Some were insecure. Some could not scale. Phase 2 in the C19 era is about
building scalable, repeatable, secure, and cost-effective solutions to support all your workflows – whether your production is creating a feature, an episodic series or an ad spot. To help production and facility

the following pages provide some advice on how to effectively reimagine familiar workflows for the new reality.
FIRST STEPS The first decisions for these teams revolve around how to create a remote working environment that bridges the normal work setting with others participating from home. There are two main approaches: In one, the creative hardware resides in your facilities and is accessed remotely via a device at home (often called virtual desktop infrastructure or VDI). In the other approach, the hardware is ‘virtualised’ using compute power from a cloud provider (often called ‘virtual workstation’). Whatever your creative contribution, the chosen approach has downstream impacts into how work is performed, how real-time collaboration occurs and how deliverables are shared with other workflows.
