OFF-SET CREATIVE PARTICIPATION In recent years, the concept of ‘dailies’ includes not only the high-resolution transcoded proxies that get pushed into dozens of workflows for post and visual effects requirements – but also a low resolution proxy available via an iPad to the many creative executives on- and off-set who want to see how the shoot is progressing. With a requirement to manage parallel shooting units in today’s pandemic-aware world, creatives on and off-lot need to be able to see what is happening across the filming infrastructure. We can help creative execs participate here in two key areas: Real-time collaboration Most of the management of multiple sound stages occurs in the ‘video village’ – but with fewer creatives allowed on-lot, real-time access to video feeds to appropriate creatives is a critical requirement. ClearView Flex gives off-lot creatives the on-lot video village experience anywhere in the world. Near-real-time creative input Even without the pandemic influence, when on-set, the director, producers, post and VFX supervisors can find it difficult to be across all the live camera feeds at once. Waiting hours or even overnight only extends the problem, requiring remote camera
units to book another day while shots are reviewed for completeness. Moxion Immediates delivers a rapid review workflow where footage pushed through the video village is securely sent to Moxion in near-real- time. This provides low- and hi-res proxies for those on-lot via iPad – and those off-lot anywhere reviewing from their Apple TV or laptop. In addition, each unit can reference the other unit’s footage to help with continuity. Editorial and VFX staff can download hi-res proxies for input into their workflows. Weeks or even months later in the process, the footage remains available and additional assets can be uploaded to drive a Moxion Cuts, Colour or VFX review, allowing controlled playback of assets in full HDR, providing for synchronised viewing in multiple locations.
REMOTE EDITING WITH GEAR IN THE OFFICE Most of the industry decided in the early days of the pandemic to build remote workflows to support their collaborative editing. Typically, this involves having the Avid / Adobe creative workstation in a machine room at the office and accessing this remotely through Teradici or HP Remote Graphics Software (RGS). In this scenario, the editor needs
25-50 Mbps of consistent download bandwidth to their home, while the network-intensive requirements of pushing real-time frame-accurate video to remote viewers is left to the office connectivity. The creative working from home is typically connected via VPN to the creative workstation located at the office. They are using a primary screen (laptop / desktop) to do the creative work, manage the timeline, bin, and so on. The ‘confidence monitor’ typically found in the editing suite is replaced in the home by an Apple TV, iPad or second laptop, with ClearView Flex streaming the output of their editing session from the office workstation to the home. When the creative is ready for a collaborative session with other members of the team, they invite them to view the live output session, and those creatives join as viewers of the stream. Using a conferencing tool (such as Zoom, Teams or BlueJeans), they can discuss changes and guide the session. The viewers can join from the viewing device of their choice – phone or tablet if they are on the go, laptop or desktop if they are working from home. For high-quality sessions, viewers can use Apple TV with a colour calibrated LG series C9/CX model TV.
