Along with other functionality, the addition of a standalone medical alert on the EN 54 compliant WES3 wireless fire alarm system provides safety on site and also gives site managers the ability to manage activity associated with the system. It was developed and engineered to ensure a simple, fast and secure way of communicating fire and medical emergencies in the complex environments found on construction sites. When this kind of technology is used in conjunction with a cloud based monitoring platform such as WES REACT, it allows project management teams to receive information in real time regarding site emergencies and to instantly send customised alerts to relevant site personnel. These advances in wireless technology, cloud based data and an easy to use mobile phone app create a fully integrated emergency response system. Gone are the days of relying on finding the first aider or manually sounding a fire bell!


In addition, as the site work progresses,


the wireless units can be quickly repositioned, once again without the inconvenience of having to deal with cabling, which requires a qualified electrician. Call points are designed so that the system is interlinked, which ensures that all floors receive the same audible and visual alert signal, even if the fire is contained to just one of them. Alternatively, if a medical alert is triggered,


the exact call point activated can be pinpointed and medical teams despatched to this exact location. The fire alarm can be manually triggered by personnel from any call point. Incorporating automatic heat or smoke detectors into the system provides automatic cover 24/7, ensuring that the site is protected even when personnel are not present.


Fire and medical


Fire safety on construction sites in the UK has advanced considerably in the last few years and, as a result, this country leads the world. That is not to say that there still is not more work to be done, and the insurance industry is on record as stating that there is an expectation that construction sites should be protected from fire with alarm systems that comply with the FPA’s JCOP. Effectively, that means fire alarm systems used on construction sites should comply with the relevant sections of EN 54.


Fire safety in completed buildings is of the utmost importance and dealt with as a priority, including carrying out regular fire drills and testing of equipment. Therefore, it is common sense that other emergencies, such as those following an accident, should be treated in the same way. The latest advances in technology now allow both fire and medical emergencies to be communicated in the complex environmental conditions of construction sites. Whether a fire or an accident has taken


place, they should be given equal priority in the effort to ensure people are protected from harm, and it is what happens in the minutes following these events that really counts. The speed at which fire and rescue services or medical response teams arrive at the exact location of the incident makes all the difference. An increasing number of construction and health and safety managers are now realising the benefits of sourcing an EN 54 compliant wireless fire alarm system which incorporates medical alerts and additional functionalities
