SOMERSET OPEN STUDIOS 2018
Welcome to Somerset Open Studios! This year over 300 artists will open up their working lives for the public.
It’s an exciting and revealing event. A chance to talk to artists and get an insight into their working practices. It’s also an opportunity to buy direct from the makers, commission pieces, introduce your children and friends to the mysteries of craftsmanship and make a day of it by sampling local pubs and restaurants and cafes for coffee, lunch and tea.
Alongside Open Studios, Somerset Art Works has organised three associated events:
The final instalment of A Landscape of Objects takes place at The National Centre for Folk Arts, Halsway Manor, with works from Andrea Oke’s residency. This project consisted of a series of site-specific commissions, residencies and curated shows, taking a different approach to the
theme of ‘A Landscape of Objects’ setting the work within different cultivated landscapes of Somerset. It aims to encourage research by artists into the spirit of place, local identity and rural context in their making.
Creative Pathway bursary winners will be on show for the duration. Creative Pathways is a professional development programme

which provides support to emerging artists, enabling them to develop their careers. Textile work is again represented at ACE Arts in Somerton by Lydia Needle, who will be mentoring bursary award winner Rebecca Bruton, while Hattie Moore and Luminara Star show the fruits of their work from the programme at solo venues in Weston Bampfylde and Bruton respectively. Georgina Towler will be making an installation for Contains Art in Watchet.
Art appreciators of all ages are welcome at Family Friendly venues and also at a Family Friendly finale weekend on 29th + 30th September, with special events and activities for all.
So, Open Studios is about discovering Art, Craft and Somerset over 16 days of September. Explore and discover!
