forward but the part where it describes how police forces deal with RFDs and their servants is unworkable. I have made strong representation that they need to do better. The new rules on servants and their background checks that were introduced back in July are sensible and are designed to ensure RFDs can ensure they can be confi dent in employing suitable people. The draft proposals fail to offer a workable system where the police and RFDs can work together to protect public safety and satisfy the requirements of employment law. I am optimistic the Home Offi ce, the Police, leadership and the trade can fi nd a sensible way forward.

General Licenses Earlier this year we saw Wild Justice induce a knee jerk reaction in Natural England that had damaging effect on both agriculture and our Trade. Thankfully Michael Gove took the process back into DEFRA’s control and the situation was eased. There is now a consultation on how this is taken forward. You

and your customers should be involved and engage through the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust to present your evidence. https:// www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ gwct_gen_lic. This challenge has not gone away and you should make your voice heard.

European Firearms Directive The European Firearms Directive governs the civilian ownership of fi rearms across the Union. The requirements of the Directive get included in UK laws and regulation. Only a ‘no deal’ will remove this linkage – and even then, it would probably be an early security related alignment that would form part of the future relationship. The latest amendments are about to appear in a change to our Firearms Rules. From a Trade perspective this will mean that RFDs’ registers will need to include more complete information about the identifi cation of each fi rearm. Class (shotgun, rifl e, revolver or pistol), calibre, name of manufacturer, country of manufacture,

date of manufacture and identifi cation number should be recorded. Furthermore, most fi rearms and their relevant component parts, manufactured or imported on or after 14 September 2018 should be marked with the maker’s name, country, date of manufacture and serial number. We continue to work with the Home Offi ce and Department for International Trade to manage this process in a way that works for the Trade. More details are available from the GTA. These are just a few of the topics where the GTA is fi ghting the needs of the Trade. Keep us informed of the things that affect you and where you need us to get involved. In the meantime, ensure your voice gets heard. These matters can infl uence the way you are able to do business. Keep abreast of the arguments and make sure you speak up.
