“And it’s the retailers that are doing well from it. They have a good business acumen as well as knowledge of the trade and products. “Those that are just led by personal


preferences and have fi xed ideas are the ones out there that are struggling. You need an open mind in any business. You have to be to realise that change is the thing that will always drive a business. “In fact it was many years ago that I learnt this. A wise man taught me some years ago that the key to a successful business is the ability to embrace change and positivity. We’re in a climate now where people have to change to be successful. You need to sell profi table product to survive. And luckily, Middy is among the most profi table tackle out there.” According to David, Middy is growing because dealers are becoming more savvy. Dealers are saying ‘what can I switch to that will boost my profi ts?’. David explains: “I suspect the trade is not growing – certainly not to the level that we are growing. We know we must have taken our growth from others, as the number of anglers certainly isn’t growing. No, instead, the cottage industry of old is becoming very business minded. The dealers that are surviving and doing well have a very professional approach, put on a professional display and profi t is essential. These are big factors and things that we constantly work on.” The past 18 months have seen signifi cant pressures on pricing.

Environmental concerns in China have led to signifi cant price increases and the fl uctuations and weakness of our own currency have exacerbated things yet further. “There have been price increases,” explains David. “But unlike other companies, we’ve no t cut margin at their expense. In fact in most cases we’ve increased dealer margin. When prices go up, as a general rule, so does margin.”
