New independent fishing tackle dealer group forms to breathe new life into angling. T&G finds out more…

T

he Association of Independent Retailers, (AIR), has been set up by some of the country’s leading tackle dealers to:

• Work directly with suppliers on exclusive products.

• Promote and maintain a brand’s presence in-store, keeping the supplier happy and confident that none of their products will be copied by the group.

• To provide a trustworthy and reliable service to the pursuit of angling.

• To encourage and nurture newcomers to the sport and grow the customer base - breathing new life into angling..

• To support good causes in and outside of the world of angling. S

ome of the biggest names in independent fishing tackle retailing have joined forces to create the Association of Independent Retailers (AIR) – an association devised to breathe new life into angling. The new group has been founded by The Tackle Box, Fat Fish Tackle, Johnson Ross, HF Angling, Carp Scene, Carp Store, Arun Angling, Browns, Wickersley Angling and Total Angling. Rumours have circulated in the trade that the group, which had its inaugural meeting behind closed doors back in May, was being put together

to apply pressure on manufacturers and brand owners to protect the trade from aggressive buying tactics brought about some in the trade. The truth is that AIR is quite the opposite, as Kevin Peet, chairman of the group and co-owner of The Tackle Box in Dartford, explains: “The ethos behind the association is to work with suppliers and with each other for the benefit of our customers. The aim is to provide the best products at realistic prices, provide a high level of customer service, develop bespoke products with manufacturers and

to encourage new people into the sport regardless of gender or age. “Is it a closed shop? No, we will welcome new members that have the same outlook and business ethic as the rest of the group, however, there will be a set of criteria that any new member will have to abide to.” The benefits of AIR, are easy to see – better co-operation between the retailer and the brands leads to better communication, better service levels and a healthy retail environment that means that brand owners and manufacturers will always have a point

And the news is that the 10 dealers that have set up the proactive group, designed to grow the sport and create a level playing field for retail, are now looking for more dealers to join.
