HYPERPROLIFIC SOW Top Specialists Gather to Share Insights into the Future of Modern Swine Production Modern sows are now more productive


than ever before due to tremendous advancements in the industry, but this new generation of sows brings a new set of challenges that require innovative nutrition and health management solutions. As a leader in swine nutrition, Novus


International, Inc., in partnership with Newcastle University, created the European Swine Nutrition Roundtable with the goal of bringing some of the industry’s leading experts in sow and piglet health together to share knowledge and reveal opportunities for future development. “The swine genetics and management


practices in Europe have changed drastically over the last decade,” said Silvia Peris, head of technical services in Europe and the Middle East for Novus. “However, this development has not been followed at the same speed by updates on nutritional requirements and feeding practices.” The event included 16 participants


from across Europe, representing each of their unique markets as they spent two days discussing the obstacles between today’s producer and the next level of performance and profitability. This roundtable is one of many being held globally to help Novus better understand the challenges and needs faced by swine producers while also providing a platform for collaboration across the industry. Key topics discussed at the event


included optimizing gene expression through epigenetic strategies (feeding the sow with the intention of her passing along advantages to her progeny), overcoming oxidative stress and possible management interventions for low birthweight piglets. Top nutritionists, researchers and overall thought leaders all presented their area of expertise. Going forward, Novus’s research and


technical teams aim to take the insights from the event to further develop effective


approaches to boost animal performance and producer profitability through its organic trace minerals, enzymes and other feed quality products.


SFT NEXTGEN SEMINAR Details have been released for the Society of Feed Technologists (SFT) inaugural NextGen Seminar, “An Introduction to the Animal Feed Industry” which will be held on 1st


March 2018.


The Seminar is aimed at recent recruits to the Feed Industry who have joined the sector over the last 2-3 years. The content of the seminar has been


tailored to reflect the views expressed by attendees at the initial meeting at SFT’s 50th


anniversary and will include talks from:


David Wilde, Product Technical Manager, Anpario on the structure of the feed industry; Victoria Buxton, Managing Director, Apheya Animal Nutrition on an introduction to feed assurance schemes, particularly UFAS and Paul Poornan, Managing Direct, Humpreys Feed and Pullets on current issues affecting the animal feed industry. The NextGen Seminar will be held on March 2018 at the Park Inn by

EXTRUSION OF PETFOODS AND AQUAFEEDS – SHORT COURSES


IN EUROPE AGAIN IN 2018 The courses are organised and presented by Australians Dennis Forte and Gordon Young, in conjunction with FôrTek (Centre for Feed Technology). The two have been presenting extrusion and related training programs in Australia and the surrounding region, including Thailand, for 20 years. Since 2015, annual Aquafeed Extrusion courses have been held, with Petfood Extrusion and Drying Technology now also offered in Europe (Norway). In 2018, the courses will be held in the


last week of April and first week of May. A major strength of the program is the practical experience of the presenters. One past participant commented “The Extrusion Course

is unique in that it is able to present the blend of the fundamental principles of extrusion technology with its practical applications. The speakers transcend the hurdles of mathematical and engineering concepts by using appropriate learning and citing their vast production experiences”. The extrusion programs are relevant to


both single- and twin-screw extruders. “We take the approach of presenting the theory behind extrusion – which applies to all types – and then showing how to apply that theory to practical processes and products”. Sessions cover the design of extrusion processes, and how the formulation affects the extrusion process, with examples demonstrating application of the theory. Principles learned are applied during the practical demonstration in the FôrTek pilot plant. The drying program is relevant to all


types of feed and food products. Drying is one of the most common operations in food and feed production, being used across virtually every sector/commodity. It is critical to the quality and/or functionality of many products, and it is one of our most energy- intensive process operations. Yet it is often poorly understood and inefficient. This short course in Drying Technology combines the practical perspective of experienced industry professionals with the in-depth technical knowledge of drying processes. The course presenters have also


published two text books which support the training. “Food & Feed Extrusion Technology: An Applied Approach to Extrusion Theory” contains similar – but expanded – information as the extrusion courses. A specialised text “The Design of Food Extrusion Dies” is unique in describing, with worked examples, this complex and important – but often poorly understood – topic.
