OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING

YACHTIE TYPES ETO

Here he comes, nerd alert! You know the sort. He looks like he was picked on at school. He is socially awkward. His jokes sail over most people’s heads, but he still laughs at them. He’s full geek. Sits in the dark all day. Definitely single. But if you want to know all the latest tricks and tips to make your TikToks and Reels better than everyone else’s, you better be nice to him and you better laugh at those jokes. Just don’t give him too much caffeine or Red Bull, unless you really want to hear how unrealistic every IT scene in every Netflix show is, AND a detailed explanation of exactly why.... Anyone seen Mr Robot? You should it was great. But let’s face it, without him we’d all be in big trouble - Mr ETO, we love you!

WHAT’S HOT...

US YACHTING This scene has been booming this summer season, the owners of yachts based and currently cruising over there have been paying crew over the odds to keep them. Day rates have hit record highs across all positions so it’s no wonder the crew are staying west.

YACHT SHOWS The shows are all back on track this year following quieter pandemic influenced events. After the success of the Palma Superyacht Show in the early part of the summer, we are expecting big things from Monaco this year and also from METS.

YACHT SALES Yacht sales are going up and up and up. The owner demographic is also getting younger, apparently there’s been a shift from the 55+ down to 45+. Despite the increased costs of living, the rich are getting richer, sooner. More work for the yachting industry at least!

THE NUMBER OF INHABITED ISLANDS IN THE BALEARICS: MAJORCA, MINORCA, IBIZA, FORMENTERA

AND CABRERA

“Waves are not measured in feet or inches, they

are measured in increments of fear.”

Buzzy Trent

CELEBS Celebs are all back on board their favourite superyachts for summer fun. Including Kylie Jenner on MY Party Girl, Conor McGregor on his own yacht and chartering Devocean one in Mallorca, Jared Leto and J Balvin on Tranquility, Drake on the newly refitted Coral Ocean, and don’t forget Ronaldo popping up in Mallorca too!

AND NOT...

90S FASHIONS They’re all making a huge comeback. With low rise cargo pants and adidas sneakers on the girls to curtain hair cuts on the boys, there’s only so much nostalgia those who saw it all first time around can take. Now, where’s that nokia 8110?

NAUTICAL HEROES

BJÖRN DUNKERBECK Legend achieves world windsurfing speed record. Björn Dunkerbeck added another accolade to his legendary windsurfing career by posting the fastest ever time on the water with a top speed of 103.67kph during the Lüderitz Speed Challenge in Namibia.

YACHT FIRES Well fire is hot… and it seems there have been a lot of yachts burning this season. 44m MY Aria, only just launched, burnt to bits off Formentera, 33m MY Good Vibes in Ibiza, 27m MY Hooligan in Estonia… thankfully no injuries on any.

THROW AWAY FASHION This has not been looked upon favourably on the high streets for some time, now we’re seeing an increase in sustainable yacht uniforms with companies such as Ocean R and Ethical Yachtwear committing to this big change, using materials such as organic cotton and/or recycled fabrics, and ensuring the uniforms made are all Fair Trade. No excuses now, we can all make a difference.

VACCINATION CERTIFICATES They certainly seem to be less and less required for crew now we hit the end of the season. Looks like Covid may hopefully, finally, be something we all just have to live with and not something we have to be regularly vaccinated against as once thought.
