Repair and rejuvinate

OMG, my hair looks a mess! And that’s just the boys talking! Brittle, split ends, colour fading and just looking flat

N

o doubt during the long hard season the weather and salt water plays havoc with

your hair, plus let’s face it, you’re run down, probably not eating correctly and sleep, well just forget that! Your body’s a wreck and so is your hair.

All of these external and internal influences with affect your skin and hair alike, so just how do we get the gloss back in the flowing locks? Each of your hair strands has three layers. The inner layer is called the medulla, which is surrounded by the middle layer, the cortex and the outer layer is called the cuticle.

DAMAGED HAIR CARE TIPS Identify damaged hair

With the right care, your hair can be nourished back to health. Repairing hair damage as soon as you notice it is essential because once the damage spreads, you might have no choice but to chop off your locks.

Avoid the heat

Cutting out heat will go a long way in helping your hair recover. Let your hair dry naturally and try out styles that don’t need heat such as curling or flat irons.

Say no to colours and chemicals

Chemicals are your hair’s worst enemy. It is not a good idea to dye or bleach your hair when it is damaged, as this will spread the damage to a point beyond repair.

Use sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners When it comes to shampoos and conditioners, opt for natural hair products that are free of harsh chemicals like sulphate or sodium laureth sulphate. Use products with natural ingredients.

Natural remedies for damaged hair Use natural ingredients like eggs, honey, oils, avocado, bananas, etc. to make hair masks. They will restore the optimum health of your hair in no time. Always prefer natural treatments to chemical ones.

CAUSES OF HAIR DAMAGE

Bleaching When you bleach your hair, you are forcing your cuticles open to remove the colour pigment from your hair. The damage caused makes the cuticles weak, prone to breaking and cause split ends. Because there is nothing to seal the moisture in your hair it also becomes dry and lifeless.

Hair colouring The chemicals present in the dyes are anything but harmless. They make your hair shaft porous to the point of exposing your hair’s cortex. Permanent dyes do the most damage to your hair.

Ponytails and Updos Putting your hair up all the time can pull them at the roots and weaken them. This can result in excessive hair fall. Plus, the accessories used can damage your hair when it is tied or pinned, resulting in breakage. Tying up your hair when wet causes the most damage.

Over Shampooing

Shampooing is supposed to cleanse your scalp and remove excess oil and dirt from it. When you wash your hair too much, the shampoo starts to strip away the natural oils and your hair becomes dry and brittle.

Salmon for growth and shine

Salmon, sardines and

mackerel are packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Green leafy veg to battle brittle hair

Spinach and kale, full of nutrients for a healthy scalp and strong mane.

Sweet potatoes for shine

Filled with the antioxidant beta carotene to protect against dry, dull hair.

The cuticle is the layer that protects your hair, and when it is damaged, your hair becomes dry and brittle. All of the chemical inputs, combined with factors like pollution, heat, and the sun, are bound to have repercussions in the form of damaged hair.

There’s nothing more heartbreaking than the thought of shearing your hair off because it has become dry, lifeless, and brittle. But panic not, we are here to help.

FOODS FOR HEALTHY HAIR

There are many things you can do to revive and protect your locks to their former glory. It won’t take long and in the long run your hair will thank you, it will be come healthier, stronger and just look fantastic.
