Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) provide a fast and effective way of distress alerting and could be your best chance of survival. Designed for personal use, PLBs are registered to individuals, come pocket- sized and can be attached to clothing or flotation devices, but must be kept up and out of the water when activated – important for individuals who may find themselves distressed in open water. EPIRBs on the other hand, must be registered to a vessel and stored onboard. These beacons are bigger, with a larger battery capacity as they must transmit distress signals while floating for 48 hours. EPIRBs should be installed on all vessels carrying passengers. Possession of an EPIRB or a PLB, or preferably both, is essential for every sea safety kit.


Every year millions of tonnes of carpets and rugs are sent to landfill or incineration, while the creation of new carpets can lead to hazardous chemicals leeching into the soil and oceans causing ecological damage. The superyacht and marine industry is only a small part of a wider problem, but with a growing focus on eco-consciousness throughout the industry, now is the time for change. Having personally seen the damage created by carpet waste being sent to landfill during a harrowing trip to the USA, we have developed EcoSylk the world’s first sustainable, luxury carpet. The luxury of comfort and time on the water are high on the wish list for anyone onboard a superyacht. While effective roll reduction solutions are certain to enhance the experience at sea, the downside with most systems is that maintenance or repair of advanced stabilizer systems could result in many days lost, and additional costs, for owners, crew and guests. Stabilization technology company Smartgyro offers a full range of gyro stabilizers that provide superior roll-reduction performance, alongside a key advantage – in situ service and maintenance, which considerably reduces a vessel’s downtime. Smartgyro’s units are ideal for yachts up to about 80 feet and can be easily installed in narrow spaces. Overmarine recently opted to install an SG80 in the stern area of a Mangusta 92, enabling maintenance and service work to be carried out, without the need to ship it back to the factory.


A smooth propeller is an efficient propeller and it’s the reason they have a high polish finish. By reducing fouling on propellers and underwater running gear, owners can reap the benefits from maximising fuel efficiency. Applying Propspeed helps to maintain a propeller’s smooth surface and its efficiency for up to 24 months. Propspeed is biocide free so rather than killing marine growth with toxins and contributing to environmental impacts, it creates a slick surface which prevents marine growth from attaching to the underwater metal. It also contributes to the reduction of CO2 and the vessel’s carbon footprint. Not only by helping to retain the smoothness and reducing fuel consumption, but it can also maintain boat speed while protecting against corrosion and electrolysis.
