Tasmania – world class wines


ONBOARD’s wine guru Brad Mitton looks at the latest fizz to come out of the southern hemisphere

The potential to produce naturally elegant wines was first noticed by George Bass, best known for the first circumnavigation of Tasmania with Matthew Flinders. Whilst sailing up the Derwent in 1802, Bass remarked in his diary that “the banks of the Derwent seemed admirably adapted for grain, vines and pasturage.”

PERFECTLY POSITIONED Jansz Tasmania sits to the northeast of the island state within the Pipers River region of the Tamar Valley. Resting on a bed of pure, red, free-draining basalt soils, the Jansz vineyard is the perfect site to grow grapes for world-class sparkling wines.


From those early beginnings Tasmania is now home to a diverse wine region, including the Tamar Valley and north east areas, the north west, along the east coast and the Coal River, the Derwent Valley and Huon/Channel districts in the south. With a cool climate and long, sunny and dry autumns, Tasmania has ideal growing conditions for developing intensely flavoured and aromatic wines.

Tasting Note


Tasmania enjoys a national and international reputation as a leading producer of premium cool-climate wines, winning high praise, not to mention an array of medals, from wine judges and critics alike.


JANSZ MÉTHODE TO THE MADNESS Tasmania…rugged yet beautiful, perilous yet breathtaking. It could be argued we’re completely mad growing grapes in this wild and unforgivingly cold environment. But there’s méthode to our madness. The climatic conditions of the Jansz vineyard rival the famed French wine region of Champagne. In fact, it was originally with French contribution that Jansz became Tasmania’s first sparkling made using the traditional Méthode Champenoise.


Aromas of honeysuckle, citrus zest and fresh strawberries from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit. Extended time on lees during secondary fermentation contributes to more complex aromas of nougat and roasted nuts. The palate is balanced with delicate fruit flavour, fine creamy texture and refreshing natural acidity.


Best enjoyed with A perfect match with natural oysters or fritto misto with lemon.


Treatment


Handpicking, gentle whole bunch pressing, cool fermentation, 100% malolactic fermentation, complex assemblage and extended ageing on lees after bottle fermentation, all combine to produce a stylish and complex wine.

Temperatures are moderated by close proximity to the Bass Straight. The ocean breezes keep the temperature up during winter – minimising risk of frost, and down in summer – allowing long, cool ripening periods.
