OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING

YACHTIE TYPES

OWNER’S DAUGHTER Watch out here come the orders.

Shouldn’t she take off those heels to save the decks - you ask her and see what she says! Daddy’s little princess has arrived with her entourage - most of them don’t really like her, but it’s a free vacation so what the hell. She quickly becomes the Chef’s best friend with her ‘fruitarianism’ diet - yes it is a real thing..... and then within her group of buddies, the Chef has to deal with the Keto and Paleo diets too. She of course has her favourite cocktails and champers and will return from her nightly visits ashore with another gang of ‘so called friends’ to party on and basically trash the yacht. We love them dearly though...... NOT!

WHAT’S HOT...

COMFORTABLE SHOES are all the rage. Not convinced? Ask Jennifer Lawrence. Recently spotted on the red carpet at Cannes in a stunning red Dior dress teamed with… flipflops. You can’t fault that.

THE PALMA INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW kicked off the season with a super busy gathering of everyone in yachting. Everyone commented how this year’s show was one of the best or even the best so far and a “mini Monaco”!

NEW CREW It’s been good to see the docks in Antibes and Palma flooded with new crew this year after the limited numbers in 2022, and virtually none at all in 2021 or 2020. However, we’re

definitely seeing a different kind of crew. They’re not all to be found boozing it up at the crew bars; the new breed definitely prefer a quieter life with many apparently being extremely nervous to dockwalk.

CREW MATTERS are being discussed at the yacht shows this year. Mental health, pay, conditions, and the change in work force are slowly being addressed. It seems these messages are struggling to reach the owners with some management companies reluctant to help deliver this info to their clients… short sighted? No crew = no industry.

The year scientists expect all corals to be gone

2050 DID YOU KNOW?

Sperm whales use their jawbone as an antenna - using teeth as receives, sonar enables whales to create a 3D map of everything around them

Having a yacht is a reason for being more cheerful than most.

Kurt Vonnegut NAUTICAL HEROES

SIR PETER JAMES BLAKE KBE (1 Oct 1948 – 5 Dec 2001) was a New

Zealand yachtsman who won the

1989–1990 Whitbread Round the World Race, held the Jules Verne Trophy from 1994 to 1997 by setting the around the world sailing record as co-skipper of ENZA New Zealand, and led New Zealand to successive victories in the America’s Cup. Blake was shot and killed by pirates while monitoring environment change on the Amazon River on 5 December 2001. He was just 53 years old.

AND NOT...

CREW STAYING Well it’s been a fairly low key start to the Med season crew wise this year, with a lot of senior crew deciding not to move on. Does this mean more yachts are offering incentives to keep them? Let’s hope so! It certainly felt like more rotation was offered, better leave and training packages and of course, an increase in salaries definitely helped.

DODGY YACHT GIGS seem to be on the increase this year too. However, there’s a rather handy (if not controversial) group on Facebook called Yachties: Name, Shame and Fame. Definitely worth doing a little check on there to see what’s what…!

LONGEVITY ON CVs is out. You try and stick to a yacht job when the world’s quite literally been burning for the past few years – freelancing is IN in a big way, especially across the pond for yachts operating in the US and Caribbean waters. Why take a permanent job when you can get an incredible day rate freelancing?

DRINKING Never thought we’d say it but drinking defo seems to be not hot anymore. Well, that is to say, amongst the new generation of crew. Gone are the days of finding your first yacht job in the Blue Lady or the Corner Bar. Now it seems crew would rather spend their money on a nice coffee!
