s we move into the warmer months, it’s important to keep some summer-specific health habits on our radar. While we’re all familiar with how essential it is to protect our skin from sun damage, it’s easy to overlook the importance of protecting against sun damaged hair.

The sun’s rays act very much like bleach on hair. The good news is that you can take precautions to protect your hair from the summer sun.


There’s nothing like the feeling of the sun on our skin on a warm summer day! Soaking up


the sun’s vitamin D is good for us. But the sun’s effect on our hair? Not so good. The sun’s UVA and UVB rays can damage


and weaken our hair cuticles, leaving us with hair that is more susceptible to dryness, brittleness and breakage.


But don’t worry - this doesn’t mean you have to forgo the sun entirely this summer! We dive into exactly how the sun affects our hair, along with the signs of sun-damaged hair to look out for this summer so you can adapt your summer hair-care routine accordingly.


Chlorine, saltwater and sun are all drying, so when it comes to summer hair, the keyword is moisture. A lack of moisture in our hair can lead to split ends, breakages and dandruff, as well as an overproduction of natural oils to compensate for the dehydration.


PREVENT SUN-DAMAGED HAIR AVOID CHEMICALS


Chlorinated water in swimming pools or lightening your hair can make it more


vulnerable to the summer stresses of heat and sun. Keep treatments to a minimum, and rinse hair immediately after swimming.

If you’ve been thinking of refreshing your wardrobe with the latest hat trends, now’s the time. Wear a hat with a broader brim.


USE THE RIGHT CONDITIONER Just as all skin tones are vulnerable to sun damage, so are all types of hair: Finer, lighter hair lacks the thickness or pigment that can protect it from the sun’s rays. Use a hair conditioner appropriate to your hair colour and type, as well as the climate.


TRY A DIY HOT OIL TREATMENT Begin by mixing three capsules of Vitamin E with a half-cup of olive oil, and then warm this mixture in the microwave for five to 10 seconds. Massage your hair and scalp, and then allow the oil to soak for 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.


GET A TRIM


While cutting your locks might not be plan A, trimming the ends of sun-damaged hair might be one of the best ways to keep strands healthy and stimulate growth.

If you notice more split ends in the summertime, you’re probably not imagining things! The sun dries out our hair, and the ends of our hair tend to be the driest parts of our locks. When our ends become too damaged, they fray and split, causing split ends.


WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM? It’s dull and lackluster


If we spend too long in the sun with no protection for our hair and scalp, we end up with locks that lack shine and vibrance, due to damage to the keratin proteins that make up our hair.


It’s brittle and susceptible to breakage When the keratin in our hair breaks down, our locks become weaker and more susceptible to brittleness and breakage. And too much breakage causes our mature hair to appear thin and lifeless.


It’s frizzy and rough to the touch Rough, frizzy hair is a sure sign of


dryness and damaged hair cuticles! When our cuticles are damaged, they lift slightly, giving us frizz and a rough texture.


OIL’S WELL ADD AN APPLICATION OF OIL TO MOISTURISE AND SOFTEN


Dry and brittle hair is prone to static as it lacks moisture. Coconut, almond, argan and olive oils can help moisturise your dull strands. Apply a few drops of any of these oils to the dry ends of your hair and brush gently. You can also massage these oils onto the length of your locks to smoothen them and tame frizz.
