News Smiths hits

the heights It’s onwards and upwards for Blackpool-based Smiths Hire, with a recent investment in twenty Snorkel S3010P push-around scissor lifts. Designed as an alternative

to stepladders, podiums and scaffold towers, the S3010P reaches a maximum working height of 5.0m, and can be easily pushed into position or manoeuvred around a building when stowed. These mini scissor lifts are suitable for all types of low-level work, including electrical and HVAC installation, construction fit-out applications, painting, signage and décor, and buildings maintenance. Smiths Hire operates 16 depots covering the North West and offers a

wide range of plant and tools for hire and sale. With more than 50 years’ experience, it specialises in powered access and has more than 560 units available to hire. The units were delivered to Smiths on November 12 and immediately deployed. Scott McCall of Snorkel UK handed over the units to Smiths Hire Joint Managing Director, Thomas Smith (right), who said: “Low level access products are popular with our customers and are hired for many different types of projects. We chose the Snorkel S3010P as they are robust products that stand up well to the demands of the hire industry, and we like that fact that they are manufactured here in the U.K., just a few hours up the road from our depots.”

We filmed a micro/mini excavator, a one-tonne dumper and a walk behind a dumpster to highlight to operators the risks associated with their actions. Further filming will take place this year to include equipment from other manufacturers who are part of the working group. This is to ensure the videos cover a wide range of products hired within the sector. When completed the videos will be a valuable resource to help spread the safety message across the industry. Safety Round Table are focused on improving the recording of incidents, reviewing standards, engaging with manufacturers and making the sector aware of potential issues. We are looking for interested parties to volunteer to join the group. Please do get in touch if you’d like to contribute. In addition to helping our members minimise the risk of accidents or mishaps on construction sites HAE is also beefing up support with a new and improved Short-Term Hired Insurance product replacing HireGuard. HireSecure is available to all members to cover accidental

loss or damage, fraudulent hire, theft, vandalism and malicious damage on owned or cross-hired equipment. This follows the announcement that Towergate Insurance Brokers has taken over responsibility for our insurance services as the new, sole broker. We felt it was necessary to examine the insurance marketplace and review HAE Insurance Services products in order to provide the most comprehensive support possible to our very varied membership base.
