“We have also installed a Wash Rack self-contained cleaning bay at Basingstoke, again from MHM. We have one at Staverton as well, and these sites do not have the capability to create a dedicated external facility. The unit is located inside the building, by the equipment servicing area, and separates out dirt, oil and other contaminants from the water that is used for cleaning off-hired machinery. It is large enough to accommodate a 1.5-tonne mini excavator.”


Expanding delivery fleet


Reflecting both the expansion of its operations and the steady increase in business, Artisan has bought more vehicles for its delivery fleet. The Basingstoke depot has taken delivery of two vehicles from Advanced KFS, one being a Plant & Go unit with a low-level chassis to facilitate loading, and the other fitted with a tail lift. Two Ford Ranger pick-ups have also been purchased for the new location. Amongst models for other depots are two 7.5-tonne Isuzu trucks, a further two Advanced KFS vehicles and two more Ford Rangers.


“This reflects just how busy our customers are,” said Jason King. “They tell us they have a lot of work on. When interest rates went up in November, none of them mentioned it when they were making conversation at the hire desk. Our bread-and-butter business has always come from groundworks contractors and other building professionals, so this is a good indication that new sites are opening up that will create demand for equipment over the long term.”


Artisan’s Oxford depot has moved into larger premises in Cowley, again on located on a trading estate and offering better motorway and main road connections with less traffic congestion en route. “The new facility gives us much more space for equipment storage as well as a larger yard area. Large trucks can turn round easily at the front and we can store our vehicles safely inside at night. There is also extensive office space upstairs and a large meeting room, which we used recently to host an open day for 48 personnel from one of our larger contractor customers that has a significant project under way in the area. This allowed them to see exactly what we do, how we operate and the services we offer.”

Artisan’s 2017 Passionate Hirer Award citation also referred to company’s commitment to “doing it the right way” and to “provide very high standards of customer care and safety,” and continues to move forward in these areas. Chris Comer explained that “we are developing the use of our inspHire software to the full, with modules for operations such as workshop management and customer signature capture for paperless working, and we have introduced vehicle and plant tracking via TomTom Telematics and CanTrack. Every item can be monitored and we even have the facility to detect when a machine or a trailer has been subject to an impact or suffered damage.


Specialist app development


“We have also invested in developing several smartphone apps. One will enable our managers to conduct a full monthly Health & Safety audit of their equipment and premises by going through a series of screens to assess different points, and they can add pictures to show real-time condition of gangways, workshop facilities and other areas of the depot. This is far better than just a box-ticking exercise on a sheet of paper, and having it on the app means it will get done more easily. Another app will enable us to undertake and record vehicle inspections, and will allow drivers to gather all the information required if they should be involved in an accident. It takes them through the procedure screen by screen and they can take photographs at the scene. It records the time and location of the incident via GPS, and all the necessary data will then be available for insurance purposes. It is currently being trialled at three of our depots.
