Guidance for lifting with excavators

The Strategic Forum Plant Safety Group has released a revised plant safety guidance document entitled ‘Lifting Operations with 180° and 360° Excavators’. The Group was formed to produce good practice guidance on plant

safety-based topics. Chaired by the CPA, it also has membership from the Health & Safety Executive, as well as representation from and contractors, hirers, manufacturers and training organisations. The document sets out the precautions and procedures that should

be taken into account when planning and carrying out lifting operations with 360° tracked and wheeled excavators, as well as 180° excavators and backhoe loaders.

Stable opportunity from Uni-Prop

Uni-Prop International is introducing the Uni-Prop multi-functional temporary support, designed to retain the familiarity of a traditional adjustable prop but quickly adapts to enable delivery of up to 2 tonnes of controlled power via a detachable hydraulic assembly, supplied as a one-piece sealed unit. Three Uni-Prop models are available, each tested to BS EN 1065

and covering a range of 1,140mm to 3,330mm between them. Uni-Prop says the Mini, Midi and Maxi models effectively replicate existing adjustable prop sizes 0, 1 and 2. The hydraulic assembly is supplied separately in a high-density plastic case, and the company believes it could be hired as a standalone item. One hirer enthusiastic about the products is Ricky Ellam, former

MD of Speedy Services and now MD of 727 Toolhire. “Uni-Prop is a great advancement in temporary support and this upgrade to the Acrow is long overdue. I’ve had many customers in my new operation comment they will be looking to hire this from me when we get stock in the spring.”
