By TIMOTHY BYRNE. EDITOR'S VIEWPOINT

THE recent flourish of headlines about CIWM’s financial position was a real topic of conversation at the RWM exhibition.

It’s something which will undoubtably have a long-term impact on the organisation, as it moves towards a more sustainable model which better serves the CIWM membership.

As a charity and an institution holding a royal warrant, CIWM plays an important part in the sector - providing the knowhow through their members which waste and recycling companies rely on.

CIWM members are engaged professionals who want the organisation to flourish. However, there’s no doubt there’s been a disconnect between some of the members and the leadership.

Countless organisations and charities have been through the same issues. In 21st century Britain, it’s inevitable that member bodies have to slim down and get their finances in shape for the long-term.

The great thing about CIWM is that they are facing their issues head on. The leadership is looking to remedy the member disconnect with a series of exciting measures which produce future growth.

The key will be to ensure members in outlaying areas are made to feel they are every bit as important as those from the major cities and metropolitan areas. This will mean better local engagement, and the leadership getting out and about into the country to meet and greet members.

Getting the RWM event spot on will also TURNING OLD PVC WINDOWS INTO NEW IT’S SIMPLY A WASTE NOT TO...

help out massively on the financial front. With revenues having slipped from the expo and even member interest waning, RWM needs to be turned back into a once- a-year member’s jamboree which is in the diary as soon as dates are confirmed.

Better member only rates to exhibit, an RWM hospitality area only for CIWM members and their guests, and a greatly enhanced package of show only member benefits would certainly help.

The great news is the CIWM leadership have a world class product to ‘sell’ in the reputation of the charity. It’s a leading professional organisation, and much- respected in UK circles and far beyond.

It will mean fundamental change, and this is never easy. However, from what I have seen and heard CIWM is already heading in the right direction under a highly motivated leadership.

While there are difficult decisions ahead, the reengagement of the membership has begun and I predict bright times ahead for CIWM.
