SKIPS, PRODUCTS AND SERVICES Waste worker's injury resulted in £30,000 fi ne

ROTHERHAM based J Edwards Waste Management, have been ordered to pay a £30,000 fi ne after a male member of staff was seriously injured after he manually cleared a trommel machine of debris.

Sheffi eld Magistrates Court heard how, on March 24 2015, the drum of a trommel used for sorting material became jammed and a worker did not turn off the machine before going into the drum to clear the obstruction.

The South Yorkshire Company was also ordered to pay £3,621 costs, after admitting to breach of Section 2 (1) of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

After the hearing, HSE inspector Laura Hunter said: “This case highlights the

importance of isolating machinery before intervening.

“This incident could so easily have been

avoided by simply having a safe system of work for clearing blockages after completing a risk assessment.”

The employee was working for the South Yorkshire Company, at Lidget Lane Industrial Estate, in Thurnscoe, when the incident took place.

Th e Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that after the employee entered the drum and cleared the blockage, the machine started to operate and rotate with the individual still inside, injuring him.

The worker was thrown around and repeatedly struck by waste material inside the drum before the machine was stopped.

Double trouble for Hull skip firm due to 'long summer'

AS THE British public said farewell to the hottest summer in years, September saw three fi re engines needed at White’s Skip Hire in north Hull after a blaze swept through the busin ess.

The fi re, which destroyed the company’s industrial shredder, was the second fi re since August to rage through the premises on Reservoir Road.

The owners say the second fi re, which was caused after piles of household waste caught fl ame, took hold overnight.

Co-owner Billy Smith said: “We have already made changes since the last fi re. Unfortunately, the fi re started (much like the fi rst fi re on August 19) on the Sunday when no one was here.

“Had it happened any other time we would have been able to deal with it immediately. We have our own hose on site, but we will now look to man the site on Sundays.”

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service station manager, Steve Hellewell said: “We have worked with the Environment Agency on the best cause of action, and we are using as little water as we can to avoid too much contaminated run-off .”

With it being the second fi re at the site over the last two months, Alan White, who runs the business with son Billy, blamed the long, hot summer.

Rubbish decomposed

He said: “We have been here 12 years and never had a fi re, and now we have had two in the last few weeks. We have had a long summer and the rubbish has decomposed which produces its own heat.

"The second fi re is as big as the one last month but this time just the shredder was damaged. Last time a machine costing hundreds of thousands of pounds was destroyed."

Businesswoman picks up prestigious PwC UK title

Jacqueline has been recognised for her outstanding achievements and leadership, which has seen the family business O’Donovan Waste become one of London and the South East’s leading waste management companies. The innovative waste business has seen substantial growth over the years to a turnover of over £20m, with 160 staff and a fl eet of 90 lorries.

Jacqueline O’Donovan, said: “I was blown away when they read out my name as they previously announced that the nominations were so strong this year, they had extended the number of fi nalists. I am honoured to be recognised by such a massive organisation like PwC. It was a nice shock on the night!”

Founded in 1959, family-run O’Donovan Waste Disposal Ltd is based in north London with fi ve sites and 160 employees.
