In a return to its in-person roots, this year’s WWA Show was humming with energy and good vibes as people were more than ready to be together again to learn from many of the industry’s best leaders and to explore a bustling marketplace filled with key industry designers, suppliers and innovators. The 41st Annual Symposium & Trade Show, held from 19-22 October 2021 in San Antonio, Texas, U.S.A., welcomed close to 1,400 owners, operators, developers and suppliers who were excited to spend quality time together learning and checking out new products and services. Turn to page 32 to read the report in full. As Attraktion! gears up to celebrate its 10th Anniversary in 2022, I spoke to managing director, Markus Beyr to find out what’s new and what next from this leading provider of media- based attractions. Find out what he had to say on page 27. When Amanda Thompson, managing director of Blackpool
Pleasure Beach took over as IAAPA chair in 2019 she became the third woman to carry out the role its 100-year history, and the first woman in Europe. What she didn’t know however, was that she would also become the only IAAPA chair to lead the association through a global pandemic and for two years, instead of the usual one. I spoke to Amanda about leading the global association - and her park team - through its darkest days – read the story in full on pages 34 and 35. I also caught up with incoming chair Ken Whiting ahead of
IAAPA Expo (15-19 November) to find out what he has planned in his new role. Ken has 40 years’ experience within the amusement parks and attractions industry. As president of his family’s business, his company operates food & beverage locations at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and other venues. Additionally, he provides guidance to venues worldwide on growing revenue and profits within all in-park spending areas, and works with industry employers to improve workplace productivity, performance and development, with the younger, next generation of employees. Ken told me: “My first objective is to stay true to the IAAPA
Strategic Plan and stay focused on successfully completely the established goals. “Given my background, I want IAAPA to be more top of mind for food and beverage professionals in our industry. F&B has risen to be a growing and increasingly impactful portion of every facility’s business - both top and bottom line. I believe there is more that IAAPA can do to support that side of our industry.
“I’d also like to raise awareness of the impact we have as
employers, particularly young, first-job employees that we all hire. We need to find ways to encourage young people to think of and choose the attractions industry as they make career decisions and plan for their future. I like to say we have jobs that inspire from a year to a career.” Read the interview in full on pages 36 & 37. Enjoy the issue!
