Moscow leads the way with new indoor theme park

As Dream Island entered its final phase of construction, Park World editor Becci Knowles spoke exclusively to chief operating officer, Stefano Cigarini about setting new standards for leisure and entertainment in Russia and beyond

How long has Dream Island been in development for? An indoor theme park, the idea for Dream Island dates back to 2010, but construction only started around three years ago. As Russia’s first theme park (Russia has many amusement parks, none of which are which themed in the way say, Disney or Universal parks are) it sets new standards for leisure and entertainment. The whole project goes far beyond a simple indoor theme

park. It will have eight themed zones and a shopping mall - all of them under the same roof of 30 hectares -, an outdoor landscape park spanning 44 hectares, a multifunctional concert hall of 3,500 seats, a 2km long embankment promenade on the Moscow river, a children’s yacht school and finally, a 4* hotel with 410 rooms.

What do you anticipate the total project cost to be? 1.5 billion dollars, covered both by the investors and by a major Russian bank Who are the investors? The main investor is a Russian company, called Regions Group, the 4th largest Russian real estate developer, with over 30 shopping malls owned and/or managed all over Russia. Amiran Mutsoev, a member of the owner’s family and chairman of the board of directors, is leading the project.

How did you choose designers, master planners, ride manufacturers etc? Design and master planning involved different companies, including the Los Angeles based design firm Cunningham Group, while rides have been selected and bought from major worldwide manufacturers like Zamperla, Intamin, SBF Visa, Heimotion, Fabbri Group, Huss, Preston & Barbieri, and Gerstlauer amongst others.

Can you tell me what the major rides and attractions will be? The park hosts eight themed areas, linked to major local and international IPs: Hello Kitty, Fairy Tale Village, The Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, - Mowgli in the Dino Land, Snow Queen’s Castle, Dream Race, and Hotel Transylvania – Monster Vacation. The main attractions will be: Shred The Sewers a Ninja

themed Launch Coaster by Intamin, On The Wings Of The Wind – soaring above thedinosaurs - a flying theatre that takes you back in time over 65M years ago when the dinosaurs were ruling the earth, the Hotel Transylvania dark ride, Snow Queen Throne Room — a 4D interactive Cinema based on the popular Russian character. All themed areas will contain coherent attractions and

experiences, kids based in the Smurfs Villagegirls based in the Hello Kitty zone, cars and speed based in Dream Race area and so on

You are the in the final stage of construction. What does this involve and what is the planned opening date? The complex is totally indoors; probably one of the biggest of its kind in the world and this, as you may imagine, makes its construction more complex. Moscow weather does not allow rewarding outdoor experiences for several months. We
