BETTER CHANGE STATESIDE
until the end of 2022 so we might also directly help more fans of the club over the coming weeks.
The Bigger Question The question from the start of the article is who is responsible for safer gambling work? The ‘polluter’ is the obvious answer and from our work we know how much the operators do in this space and how much more they want to do so who else can get involved. A lot of industries are very happy to take sponsorship from the gambling industry and benefit as part of the gambling ecosystem but don’t have any real responsibility in protecting people from gambling related harm. Sports organisations and teams are an obvious example of this. The question about gambling sponsorship and involvement in sport, especially football, is a topic of hot debate but regardless of the rights or wrongs of this Southampton Football Club have made a small step in hopefully redressing this balance and accepting some form of social responsibility to join the fight to protect people from gambling harm. We have some big plans at Better Change to work with
more sports teams, focusing on fans, to support the excellent work that 3rd party provides and operators currently do as we see this a simply another way to protect people who need it, whilst also not demonising the gambling industry which provides for many people, an extra layer of excitement and entertainment to the viewing and interest in certain sports. At Better Change we are always keen to collaborate, the
work as Southampton was in conjunction with Recover Me, a treatment app for individuals with gambling problems which is also supported by the club. This was a perfect fit with us due to the fact we raised awareness and offered modern content and education while people who needed it have access to Recover Me as a treatment. We would love to hear from other organisations who want to work with us on reducing gambling related harm
through innovative ways, and if you are unsure how this might look let’s have a conversation. Also, is your team doing enough? What sports do you think could do more? Let us know and let’s open these conversations about having a real impact on the community of fans which passionately follow their sport and team’s week in week out, often using gambling as way to make this experience even more exhilarating!
