Uruguay, vuelve a primera plana

Ricki Chavez-Munoz reports on what’s happening in South America.
study in Brazil, published in February 2026, estimates that the illegal online betting market generates between R$26 billion and R$40 billion a year, (up to US$7.7 billion) – placing unregulated sports betting in Brazil between 41% and 51% of the total. Incredibly, in view of the above, politicians threaten to impose more taxes on the sector and upset the fine balance between progress and illegality with bans on advertising among other senseless beauties. In the face of such proposals, the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming has strongly rejected changes in the progress of the Bets sector, warning that such measures would significantly strengthen organized crime within the local betting market, and that the concern should be on combating illegal gambling for the benefit of society. Meanwhile in Argentina, the Casino de Necochea soap opera takes another turn, and as the Necochea Municipality has stated, does agree at all with the criteria of the Judge who issued precautionary measures suspending the Casino auction, and it will proceed to file the corresponding legal suit to reverse the judge’s measure to auction the casino. Hopefully the casino will be sold soon to stop its deterioration, as it continues to fall apart bit by bit.
A Uruguay returns to the front
page with the news that the Municipality of Montevideo will transfer Casino Parque Hotel to the Ministry of Economy and Finance following agreements between opponents and the municipal government on this, owing to consistent operational losses during the last five years exceeding about US$10.6 million.
Likewise, the casino sector in Chile also seems to be entering into uncertainty with the possible withdrawal of leading companies such as Enjoy and Dreams from the tenders for casino operations in Coquimbo, Iquique, Viña del Mar and Pucón cities.
And so, we leave just now for the SBC Rio Summit on the 3rd-5th, then on to Buenos Aires for SAGSE South America on 17th-19th, and from there to the GAT Cartagena, on 24th-26th of March. Phew... See you there!
Cheers, Ricki
