Impact 3D Signs never once envisaged its customers requesting rusty looking signs, as the team spends 99% of its time ensuring that this does not happen to its signage, but it is a ‘thing’ and to be honest it appeals!

Impact 3D Signs is proud to produce rusty looking metal that can become a statement piece to great visual effect. As a company based in Newcastle when asked what the effect will look like when done, the team simply says ‘look at the Angel of the North’.

So, what is the perfect sheet material to achieve the rusty effect? This leads to a more in-depth conversation, what depth of shade is needed, appearance of the surface, application.

Sheet material Mild steel rust effect www.signupdate.co.uk

The sheets that stand out to Impact 3D Signs are Corten and mild steel. Corten is striking but expensive. It has a more industrial look. It produces a very visual eye-catching reddish-brown effect and

over time an orange hue develops. It has a unique layer of rust so in effect making a natural protective barrier, this gives it a very long-life span.

Mild steel is cheaper, softer and more malleable making it perfect for the looks asked to achieve, when treated it produces warm and varied brown tones. It does not have as long a life span as Corten but can be treated.

The most popular question asked is ‘if mild steel is used, how long will the process take to achieve the effect we are looking for’. Simple – a rust accelerator is used to speed up the process and rust inhibitor to stop the process when the desired affect is achieved. This can be a great benefit in environments where the public are, say an outdoor shopping centre where an instant look is achieved and then to be maintained.

Sustainability

Something top of the list in today’s environmentally conscious world is for the team to consider the sustainability factor. Both Corten and mild steel are 100% recyclable, aiding in reducing environmental footprint. Arguably, Corten steel takes the lead in environmental friendliness. Its unique property of forming a protective layer eliminates the need for paint or a protective coating which can be harmful to the environment. All in all, Impact 3D Signs looks forward to rusting many more signs in the future and if it helps the environment why not?
