The decline of neon and those fighting back

A

pair of business owners are helping to keep neon sign making alive after it was added to the Heritage Crafts Association Red List of Endangered Crafts.

Cheaper LED alternatives and fewer tradesmen practising the work have led to a decline in the medium. However, a pair of business owners is helping to buck this trend. Wife and husband Catherine and Tony Spink own Neon Creations, based in Bolton. The pair have been working to get a campaign off the ground to halt the false advertising of other products as neon. “We don’t have anything against

LED signage,” Mr Spink said. “In fact, we can even supply it, but it’s false to market a product as neon if it is not. It’s not fair to the consumer and it’s not fair for the industry.” Research by the FSB and Public First found that the number one area in which the public said that small businesses were more important than large businesses was for keeping traditional craft and skills alive (78%). This was followed by pride in local communities (76%), providing unique services and products (72%) and growing the local economy (57%).

Moss’ sustainability scheme success after collecting millions of tonnes of waste products

M

oss has recorded more than six tonnes of plastic and 4.3 tonnes of aluminium being recycled after completing its first collection of its closed-loop scheme.

It was launched in 2024 in collaboration with Multipanel UK and Perspex Distribution and was designed to underscore the dedication to minimising waste and maximising resource utilisation across the three businesses and throughout the supply chain. Once at the end of their life, the panels are collected by Moss with all waste trimmed using a guillotine cutter

and separated into aluminium and Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) streams in Birmingham.

The aluminium is baled, crushed and shipped to a UK aluminium smelter, contributing to the UK’s supply chain. Meanwhile, the LDPE core is ground into small pellets, which are returned to Multipanel UK and formed into a new core. Mike Hamling, group account director at Moss UK, said: “Sustainability is fundamental to all Moss’s global operations and these strong relationships with like-minded suppliers highlight the

Solutions, Customisable LED Projects, and XR Studios and Immersive Environments.

Paul Midwood, company director at Solstice AV, said: “We’re excited to partner with LianTronics, whose advanced LED technology enhances our ability to support resellers and empower them to meet the demands of clients seeking impactful and custom LED displays. “This collaboration marks a significant step in expanding our portfolio and further reinforcing our commitment to providing world-class LED technology.”
