Self-adhesive vinyl: How to master the art of removing it


Removing reflective vinyls is a tedius part of the wrapping process, but also not an easy one to master. In this column, Paul Hughes, owner of Sign Making Tools, discusses the tricks to removing reflective vinyl.


I


often get asked what is the easiest way to remove the most sun-baked reflective vinyl, my


standard reply is to burn the vehicle and claim the insurance! Back in the real world how do we do this efficiently? You are never sure what you are going


to get. The example I use for this is a fleet of minibuses I had lettered, which needed cleaning off as the vehicles had come to the end of a five-year lease. Eight vehicles, the same roll of vinyl,


all fitted the same day in the same conditions, yet five years later one vehicle’s graphics came off in just over an hour, then the next took five hours. What was the variable? One was


polished, one not? One stored in a garage, one in direct sunlight? Who know but the same vinyl acted in very different ways. Now add in that we may not know


if the vehicle was cleaned and have no knowledge of what make or grade of vinyl was used, when and how it was fitted and you can see we could be heading for problems. I will only undertake cleaning work on an hourly rate, from experience I give them a guide of how long it may take, but if it takes longer or less time, then the pay reflects that. I have had much resistance to this over the years, some go and try to do it themselves, and most are soon back at your door accepting your hourly rate.


Tools and techniques to use Heat is our friend, that can be parking the vehicle in direct sunlight, a heat gun, inferred lamps or a paint booth set on high. The main aim is to get the vinyl film off and if at all possible for it to take its adhesive with it. From experience it’s not getting the vinyl warm it is about getting the substrate warm and then varying the angle the film is being pulled at will improve the outcome. The main tool used when stripping vinyl graphics are plastic razor blades,

sharp enough to lift the edge of the film yet will not damage the paint. Using these blades also stops the edge of the film stabbing you under your nails if trying to do the remove by hand. Removing wheels can be the answer


for smaller areas. A removing wheel is a tractor type rubberised wheel that fits into a drill or to an angle grinder. The wheel rotates creating friction between it and the vinyl and removes both the face film and the adhesive. Care must be taken not to dwell too long in one spot and mark the paintwork. There are numerous chemicals on the


market that claim to be able to remove vinyl graphics, most will assist but none are a magic bullet.


Removing the adhesive Once we have removed the vinyl we


may be left with the adhesive. To remove this we can use one of the many adhesive removal liquids available. It should be noted that it is wise to have different brands at your disposal as you will find one will work better on a specific job, but that a different brand could work much better on the next. Try to soak the adhesive in the liquid,


avoid direct sunlight that will dry the adhesive out, and let the adhesive soak for a few minutes. Now use the plastic scraper blades to scrape the adhesive off. Repeat until most, if not all, the adhesive is removed and only then use a rag to remove the last remaining adhesive. Now clean with IPA to remove any residue from the adhesive remover, and you’re ready to hand the vehicle back to the customer or apply new graphics.
