Skills body united in its aims to raise standards
With the aim of creating a more representative and collaborative skills partnership for the UK plumbing and heating industry, the Plumbing & Heating Skills Partnership (PHSP) is set to widen its Strategic Group membership to include the Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering (CIPHE), the Plumbing, Heating and Mechanical Engineering Joint Industry Boards (JIB-PMES & SNIJIB) and Unite the Union. At a recent Skills Summit, held at
BPEC’s offices in Derby, the PHSP UK Strategic Group agreed on a
environmental sustainability goals. “Our Partnership is dedicated to developing and extending education and training, fostering a commitment to professionalism and competency at every level within our industry,” says Duncan Wilson, PHSP chairman. “It’s centred around facilitating dialogue and collaboration across the profession alongside taking practical action. With a membership that is both diverse and representative we can achieve greater outcomes; unity not only makes us stronger but also more effective. “The PHSP works to ensure
number of collaborative initiatives to support the industry’s role in the UK’s transition to net zero. By focusing on sustainable practices and innovations, the PHSP aims to contribute significantly to the national effort to reduce carbon emissions and achieve
that appropriate and consistent standards, qualifications and apprenticeships continue to be available across the UK, alongside addressing wider future skills needs of the plumbing and heating industry.” ◼

Funding for air ambulance
Commercial heating and ventilation specialist Lord Combustion Services has funded a new Toyota Yaris for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity so the pre-hospital organisation can continue to receive blood and blood products for its lifesaving service. The Oldbury-based company is a long-term supporter of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, having last year contributed to the funds for three air ambulance missions and five missions in the pre- hospital service’s three critical cars through donations made at a dinner held to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary.

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for new recruits to work at its research stations in Antarctica, including skilled plumbers, electricians and generator technicians. BAS’s HR business partner Richard Howard explains: “We have world-
class laboratories, accommodation buildings, offices and technical facilities at our five scientific research stations in Antarctica. We need the best people to keep everything running smoothly and to provide top quality support to our science and logistics programme. The chance to work on the ice surrounded by stunning scenery, icebergs, penguins, whales and seals will be a fantastic experience.” Contracts run from six to 18 months and are flexible. An additional
allowance is also paid if significant training is needed at BAS Head Office in Cambridge before deployment in Antarctica. ◼
