X Tour sports tourers , Adventure and Adventure HD leisure trikes and the first-of-its-kind Full Fat off-road model. Each of the trikes can be modified to suit people’s needs such as single-hand controls, seat options for ease of entry, special pedals, cranks, helping handles that enable riders to easily sit and get out of the trike, and easy adjust kits that let users change the trike to suite different height riders. Riders from just under 5ft to 6ft 5” can ride the trikes and models have a maximum rider weight limit of 150kg or 23 stone.
“The best thing in the world for ICE is the smile of joy on the face of someone riding for the first time ever. 99% of new riders come back after having their first test ride with a big smile on their faces,” said Zschiesche. “This is called the ‘ICE Trike Smile’.”
Partnering with IBDs ICE sells most of its trikes through more than 230 worldwide dealers, with around 30 based around the UK. “Being an ICE dealer can come in many shapes and sizes,” explained Zschiesche.
“Some specialise [for] adaptive disability riders, some are traditional bike shops who are looking to grow their customer base and some are small enterprises working from home. “Many bike shops have discovered the benefits of being a dealer. Trikes are usually more expensive than traditional bikes and the time taken with a customer to ensure they get the right trike is rewarded in profit from the sale.” One bike shop in Peterborough recently became an ICE dealer and, after receiving their first demo, quickly sold
their first high value electric assist trike. “This is encouraging for them, showing that offering a new type of bike can bring in a completely new group of customers,” said Zschiesche. “Another new UK dealer who specialises in adaptive
cycling is now one of ICE’s top five dealers world wide. The customers are out there and they are buying high value premium trikes.” With traditional bike sales still in a slump, many retailers are looking for new customers and niches to expand into. Adaptive and recumbent cycling is a growing sector within the bike market that could offer a number of benefits. As we have seen with e-bikes and cargo models, the opportunities go beyond the initial sale with the workshop more integral than ever when maintaining such a high-end product.
As well as retailers, ICE works with organisations such as the National Trust, Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes and the Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride. ICE is also an official commercial partner to British Cycling’s Limitless disability and Para Cycling programme. Looking to the future, ICE is working on several new design projects for its trikes and accessories. Plans are afoot to do more in the accessible cycling
sector with occupational therapists, clinics and health care organisations to deliver the right accessible cycling solution for their patients needs.
There is also plenty of opportunities for bike shops to get involved in the ICE journey as the brand is actively expanding its dealer network Zschiesche said: “We are looking for quality bike shops with great reputations who really know their stuff to represent our brand and also bike shops who would like to become service and supply centres for the adaptive cycling market.”
