VIRTUOS ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND

Virtuos is one of the world’s preeminent outsourcing partners, yet in all of its 20-plus years, despite having outposts across Europe, it has never had a permanent foothold in the UK. That changed recently with the acquisition of Leamington’s Third Kind Games. Gilles Langourieux talks to MCV about where it might lead

What motivated Virtuos to make this acquisition and why was the UK market specifically attractive at this time? The UK is home to one of the oldest and biggest pools

of game development talent worldwide and has always been an important market to us. After 20 years since Virtuos was founded, we are excited to formally establish our presence in the UK through the acquisition of Third Kind Games. Third Kind Games has a unique leadership team

composed of nine co-founders who impressed us with their motivation to grow the studio. Not only do they bring a wide set of skills, but they also managed to navigate profitably in a difficult period for the industry. Simply put, we were impressed by their drive. The acquisition is guided by Virtuos’ three-fold expansion strategy. Firstly, we seek access to new talent

pools outside of countries where we currently operate. Secondly, we want to have studios physically close to our clients globally. Lastly, it’s about acquiring new skillsets or bolstering our capabilities. Joining forces with Third Kind Games enables us to do all that and work more closely with studios such as Playground Games and Rare, which are existing clients of Third Kind Games.
