25YEARS

AWARDS 2023

MCV/DEVELOP AWARDS 2023 May 11th

Last month more than 500 members of the UK games industry gathered at 8 Northumberland Avenue, near London’s Trafalgar Square, for this year’s MCV/DEVELOP Awards.

As well as a celebration of the many innovations and achievements across the UK games industry during the last year, the evening marked almost 25 years since the first issue of MCV rolled off the presses – before it would go on to challenge, dominate and eventually incorporate its great rival, CTW.

The annual event also marked the 20th orbit around the sun since the first MCV Awards ceremony, but, of course, wasn’t the 20th actual ceremony. Thankfully, the enforced break we all endured due to Covid means we can go all-out again next year. A 25th anniversary followed a year later by a 20th makes complete sense, no? Heck, let’s throw in a 40th as well – CTW’s!

…All of which goes to show how long MCV and its long-assimilated predecessor have been reporting on the ins, outs, ups and downs of UK gaming: CTW launched in the same month as Elite, arguably the most influential UK game of all time. MCV shares its debut with Ocarina of Time, one of the most revered games around the globe, and the latest awards were held on the eve of the release of Zelda’s most recent adventure – a game that no doubt nursed one or two hangovers over the next few days.

By all accounts a fine time was had by all, even those who failed to secure one of the evening’s dangerously heavy awards. Thanks to everyone that helped make it a night to remember, from everyone that voted, all those that came along, the finalists, winners, and of course the award sponsors and supporters.

We look forward to doing it all again next year for the 20th/40th!
