A head of Steam
reetings programs. I think it’s fair to say the honeymoon period is over…
As I selfishly used last issue’s Editor’s page to bore you with
my personal history, I wanted to dedicate a little text this month to thanking everyone who’s welcomed me so warmly to my new position. Various old friends now in lofty positions - along with plenty of friendly new faces - have welcomed me with some lovely messages… along with requests to “please post this at 10am tomorrow morning”. Quid pro quo. I love it!
Another thought crossed my mind as I started considering which games had taken up way too much of my time since we last spoke. That thought was ‘I’m still weird’. Let me explain…
The first industry job I had – Staff Writer on EMAP Images’ The One for Amiga – was a dream come true for me, only marginally tarnished on my first day when I was shown where the kettle was and then told to sort 200 postcards to work out who’d won a competition (yes – people used to enter competitions ON BITS OF PAPER back in the 90s. Crazy!)
However, one of the ‘duff jobs’ saved for the least senior staff member was organising the “Public Domain” pages of the magazine. I was handed several jiffy bags filled with 3.5” micro floppy disks (save game icons to you kids) and told to ‘find the gold’. This was considered a crap job, but I LOVED it.
Never mind your AAA titles; this was my jam. Quirky, ugly, crap, brilliant, inventive, imaginative games… and LOTS of them!
And now I have Steam.
It’s much the same process as vetting PD games; download a demo, play a demo, delete a demo. OR… download a demo, get obsessed about a demo, buy the full game (if codes are no longer blaggable) and pour way too many hours into consuming the weird and wonderful.
I actively avoided PC gaming in recent years, simply because I spend so much time hunched over a desk for work, doing the same for recreation seemed unappealing. Steam, however, is the perfect solution. Hundreds of snappy, quirky games to jump in and out of, with the chance of encountering a FEED THE AI or Space Haven along the way.
As we speak, my library is filled with yet-to-play nuggets, so excuse me while I start sifting. Matt
