Managing increasingly complex systems, and industry standards such as automotive Ethernet for example, create additional requirements for automotive testing and the accompanying security issues
Data throughput testing Depending on the IP data throughput for E2E performance, additional IP analyses across different layers are possible. These analyses reveal who generates how much and what E2E traffic, and how to optimise that traffic for various solutions. The stability of the IP application can also be tested with specific IP impairments. In parallel with the E2E performance measurements, the CMW500 can analyse the physical layer (PHY) and media access control (MAC) layer throughput, and measure RF parameters such as error vector magnitude (EVM) and up-link (UL) power.
Battery life and current drain measurements Battery power consumption and testing is becoming ever more important, especially in the analysis of cost-effective Internet of Things (IoT) modules and mobile devices and electric vehicles; see Figure 4, bottom. With an increasing number of apps con stantly running on smartphones, there is a risk that not enough battery power is left for voice calls. Such application behaviour must be tested and analysed in a controlled, emulated network environment. Another possible test scenario is the correlation between
current drain and signalling or IP activities. In fact, specific signalling trigger events, as well as IP activity trigger events from the R&S CMW500’s built-in IP analysis are displayed in a current-drain diagram.
Over-the-top (OTT) applications Modern OTT apps are active in the background and generate a periodic radio resource control connection to the operator. This is additional signalling traffic and data exchange. It generally interferes with other applications and reduces device battery life. The goal is to keep this type of signalling to a minimum.
CMWrun sequencer PC software tool The CMWrun sequencer PC software tool is an all- encompassing automation tool for audio and video performance and battery-life testing; see Figure 4, left. Any deviations from the expected audio and video output can be automatically detected and precisely measured. The software engine is based on the execution of test plug-
in assemblies. Its architecture allows easy and straightforward configuration of test sequences without requiring specific programming knowledge of how to remotely control the instrument. It also provides full flexibility when configuring parameters. Standard-specific CMWrun package options include:
(a) Verification of audio quality with established algorithms such as perceptional evaluation of speech quality and perceptual objective listening quality analysis under fading and IP impairment conditions;
(b) Video testing with all key performance indicators for video quality, including signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), structural similarity and mean opinion score values;
(c) Testing of VoLTE calling parallel to data throughput IP data throughput and analysis testing, including OTT applications.
Electromagnetic compatibility test solutions For measuring EMC, there’s a solution based on the R&S FPC1000 spectrum analyser and the user-friendly R&S Elektra Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) test software. The software is available in several versions, such as with
