Feature: Industrial electronics

network management protocol (SNMP) services to be used with authentication and authorisation to monitor the networked equipment. Working with an embedded system

specialist is essential for designing critical embedded network projects, since physical security comes from the ports of specific switches. Small form-factor pluggable (SFP) ports can convert a network’s copper medium into a fibre-optic channel. Tis is particularly important in networks that carry sensitive and mission-critical data, such as in military and defence applications, because it protects against electromagnetic snooping. Fibre-optic channels also transmit data at longer distances, with less signal loss. In mixed-media applications, copper

wire networks are commonly used for local communication, and interface with fibre- optic networks for high-speed applications, network-to-network connectivity and long- distance communication. As such, several manufacturers of small form-factor Ethernet switches include a combination of ports on their products. At Recab, our partnerships with Ethernet switch manufacturers mean we can develop solutions that provide flexibility and increased network security. For example, Diamond Systems’s EPSM- 10GX4 Ethernet switch module is ideal for custom embedded systems where space is limited. Te EPSM-10GX4 is based on the computer-on-module (COM) Express Mini standard form-factor (84 x 55mm), with ultra-compact footprint and almost fully-encapsulated switching technology. It provides 24 x 1Gbps copper ports and 4 x 10Gbps SFI ports. Tere is also the EPS-24G4X full-feature carrier board, which brings out the 1Gbps ports to latching connectors and the 10Gbps ports to SFP+ sockets. Of course, the application calls for an

exact Ethernet switch to be used. Recab is experienced in developing systems that include switch designs, either of its own development or from its partners – Aitech, Kontron, Duagon or Diamond Systems. Te solution is designed to suit the needs of the project and the environment of the application. For example, a rail application might call for the use of a switch from Duagon

Each application requires the right Ethernet switch
