Mr Fletcher says: “Consumers are recognising that investing in high-quality, durable appliances reduces the need for frequent replacements, minimising waste over time.” The company’s dishwasher range achieves an A energy rating, but ASKO argues that responsible manufacturing must form part of the wider sustainability story too. All of its factories are ISO 14001 certified, while the business has held ISO 9001 certification since 1995. Every appliance is also tested before leaving the factory. Going the extra cycle For Haier and Hoover, the next stage of sustainable appliance development is increasingly centred on taking the effort out of efficiency. Rather than expecting consumers to continually adjust settings or change established routines, both brands are investing in technologies that can automatically manage energy, water and other resources more effectively. Across the Haier portfolio, this approach extends from refrigeration and laundry to dishwashing. The Horizon Collection fridge freezers, for example, use advanced cooling

consumption through its latest appliances. Its ProWash Series 7 washing machines have been developed with energy performance in mind, while Collection 3 Ovens feature an Air Fry function, offering consumers a more energy- efficient alternative to conventional oven cooking. “Sustainability now sits alongside performance, connectivity and design as one of the key pillars of product development,” a spokesperson comments. “Rather than treating sustainability as a standalone feature, we’re designing appliances that naturally help consumers reduce energy, water and food waste as part of their everyday routines.” AI and connected technology are expected to become particularly significant in achieving this. Modern laundry appliances can detect factors including load size and fabric type and respond by optimising water, detergent and energy consumption.
Intelligent dishwashers
can similarly adapt cycles according to how soiled a load is, rather than applying identical settings every time. Hoover’s H-300 fridge freezers also focus on flexible storage, giving consumers greater scope to customise the space available to preserve different types of food. Connected platforms such as hOn can add another layer, providing
personalised programme recommendations and insights into appliance use. This reflects what Haier and Hoover see as an important change in consumer expectations. “Consumers increasingly want sustainability
to happen automatically rather than requiring additional effort,” says a spokesperson. Energy efficiency remains a major consideration, particularly against the backdrop of household running costs, but the sustainability conversation is broadening. Food preservation, durability, repairability and product longevity are becoming increasingly relevant alongside energy and water consumption. This presents an opportunity to move the sales conversation beyond the energy label and demonstrate how these technologies can make a tangible difference in the home. “Consumers increasingly want to
