Durability is another increasingly important part of the sustainability conversation. AEG’s SaphirMatt induction hobs feature a scratch- resistant surface designed to withstand everyday use, supporting the wider principle of consumers investing in appliances that are built to last. Laundry is another area where small changes to everyday habits could have a significant impact. The 9000 Series AbsoluteCare 8kg Washing Machine features an AbsoluteWash 49-minute programme, which filters water to improve detergent performance and achieve complete stain removal while using up to 30 per cent less energy. AEG’s 7000, 8000 and 9000 Series washing machines also feature Steam Refresh, designed for clothes that have developed a slight odour but do not necessarily require a complete wash. The steam cycle uses up to 96 per cent less water than a standard washing programme. Mr Forbes says: “By encouraging consumers

to refresh rather than rewash clothing, Steam Refresh helps reduce water and energy use while also extending the life of garments by reducing unnecessary washing.” Smart technology is also beginning to play a larger role. AEG’s AI Cool Assist technology can learn users’ routines and adapt refrigerator settings accordingly, helping optimise cooling and potentially reducing energy consumption by up to 10 per cent. Meanwhile, the AEG app provides maintenance reminders, including when washing machine care cycles should be run or hob extractor filters replaced. These developments reflect changing consumer expectations. AEG’s 2025 research found that 94 per cent of consumers believe water consumption will be an important consideration when making their next appliance purchase, while 88 per cent want brands to actively help them become more energy efficient.

49 “Consumers are increasingly looking for

products that can help make efficient choices easier, not more complicated,” Mr Forbes adds. “They want clear programmes, intuitive controls and technologies that help them use the right amount of water or energy while still achieving excellent results.”

Loads better

For ASKO, sustainability in the appliance sector is becoming as much about longevity as it is about reducing energy and water consumption. The manufacturer believes that building products to withstand years of use, while incorporating technology that makes better use of resources, will become increasingly important to consumers.

This philosophy can be seen in ASKO’s DW60 dishwasher range, where the company has placed particular emphasis on the materials used in construction. Its 8 Steel approach means eight of the dishwasher’s key components are manufactured from high-quality steel rather than plastic, with durability forming a central part of its sustainability credentials. rigorous tests designed to simulate 20 years of average household use. While the manufacturer stresses this does not guarantee a 20-year lifespan, Mr Fletcher says it demonstrates its focus on “exceptional durability and performance”. Technology is also helping consumers manage

the resources used during each wash. Auto Dose automatically dispenses the appropriate amount of detergent, with its compartment capable of holding up to 30 days’ supply. Meanwhile, ASKO’s Super Cleaning System removes the need for consumers to rinse dishes before loading them into the machine. “By removing the need to rinse dishes

before loading, the system helps save water, electricity and effort while ensuring it starts the main wash with clean filters and fresh water,” Mr Fletcher says. Turbo Combi Drying

ASKO, explains: “A key feature that sets our dishwashers apart is our unique 8 Steel construction. No other material lasts as long as steel, and no other dishwashers have as many details made from steel instead of plastic.” Longevity is backed by extensive product testing. ASKO says its dishwashers undergo

considered approach, initially using Turbo Drying before automatically opening the dishwasher door and completing the process using indoor air. Consumers can also use the ConnectLife app to remotely monitor their dishwasher and receive guidance on selecting suitable programmes.

ASKO believes these features reflect a

broader change in how consumers assess an appliance’s environmental credentials. Rather than focusing solely on its energy rating, shoppers are increasingly considering materials, manufacturing processes and how frequently a product may need replacing. >>
