Electrical Product Safety Conference: ‘This is the moment to set the framework for the next 30 years’.
The Electrical Product Safety Conferences addressed the importance of the full circular economy, as well as other critical issues the industry is facing.
Major conference on electrical safety tackled full lifecycle of products The clear focus of the 2023 Electrical Product Safety Conference was the importance of the whole product lifecycle from design and pre- market to on-the-market and end-of-life – the full circular economy. Held at Church House in Westminster, London on 16 November 2023, the day- long event brought together more than 240
delegates from government departments, manufacturers, retailers, importers, lawyers, fire and rescue services, and test houses. The conference investigated critical issues,
offered solutions, and shared insights on the growing need for electrical product innovation to support the UK’s transition to a net-zero future - it explored key themes and trends affecting consumer safety and the electrical product industry. Opening the conference, Lesley Rudd, Chief Executive of Electrical Safety First, told delegates: “Whatever our legislative framework ends up looking like, it must protect consumers as well as supporting good business. “And to do this we need the UK to have
a robust enforcement mechanism at both a local level and centrally, with OPSS having the powers it needs to deal with serious risk, including issuing penalties to those who blatantly fail to comply with the law.”
To market and beyond The conference was hosted by Katie Prescott, Technology Business Editor at The Times, with a theme of “To market and beyond”. This led to discussions on issues such as how to ensure safety from the outset of product design, the legal responsibilities and due diligence needed to take a product
to market, supply chain
issues, service and repair, the lack of global regulation, and the pros and cons of product removal versus extended life. Key government representatives were Kevin Hollinrake, the Minister for Enterprise, Markets and Small Business, who gave the opening keynote address, and Sarah Smith, OBE, Deputy Chief Executive, Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) at the Department for Business and Trade. She was among the panelists for the session on regulation and noted, “This is the moment to set the framework for the next 30 years.”
