Moving with the times Over at Glen Dimplex Consumer Appliances, Steve Dickson, Senior Consumer Marketing Manager, agrees that the growing interest in healthier eating and healthier preparation methods is driving innovation across multiple categories. “Not only that, but there’s now more demand


for the larger capacities and connected appliances. Even before the pandemic, the range cooking sector was changing to reflect the demands of the consumer – what was quite a traditional category was evolving to suit the high-tech consumer looking for market-leading technologies.” Stoves was one of the first brands to apply


Bluetooth technology to a range cooker and, when it comes to healthier cooking trends, it has also introduced functions like Steam & Infuse on the Stoves Deluxe range cookers – which allows consumers to achieve healthy cooking more quickly, evenly and with fuller flavour. Mr Dickson goes on: “The built-in category is


about features that offer flexibility in the kitchen and capacity – so products offering much larger capacities are a great solution for larger households.” He believes that in-store demonstrations are key


to imparting advice and tech benefits to consumers. “Research has shown that strong product


knowledge amongst staff, and their ability to make recommendations based on understanding the customer’s requirements, are the best ways to motivate a sale,” says Mr Dickson. “Range cookers remain an aspirational


purchase, so it’s important to stock both traditional and contemporary models to appeal to both types of consumer. And don’t be afraid to display something in a bold colour!”


The future of cooking From the traditional to the futuristic… smart capabilities have taken over cooking appliances in recent years. Purchases of connected home products increased between March 2020 and March 2021, according to Mintel. Haier Group reported a 30 per cent increase in


YoY sales of connected appliances in this period. The COLLECTION 3 oven range, for example, comprises new smart connected technologies that allow remote control of the oven via an app, they can even be voice activated via a smart speaker.

they offer some obvious benefits that you’d expect of a modern-day connected product, their impact will be unique to each individual and their lifestyle,” comments Nick Platt, Hoover’s Business Director for Built-in Appliances. “One person might access new recipes via the


app, while another may find the energy consumption details the most useful feature.” Mr Platt points out that while many consumers


caught the cooking ‘bug’ during lockdown, people have been pleasantly surprised with the ease of use and convenient features available on today’s modern appliances, meaning ‘professional’ recipes aren’t too challenging. He also says: “When it comes to selling cooking


appliances the aesthetic has a huge role to play; unlike other appliances, ovens, hobs and hoods cannot be integrated and concealed behind cupboard doors, so their look and feel are of paramount importance. “Live cooking demonstrations in retail stores can


show appliances in use, with delicious aromas acting as a real ‘pull’ for potential buyers... inside or outside the store! If the appliance is connected, then the opportunity to use the app is another great way of demonstrating its real-life benefits.”


Quick and easy For some people, quick and easy dinners are much more preferred – especially during the working week. So while larger appliances are useful for big family cooks, other smaller gadgets might come in more handy when time is of the essence. The freestanding countertop Hotpoint Supreme
