With smart and connected appliances growing in popularity, and with the kitchen and living space often morphing into one, the design and functionality of an appliance is as important as ever. ERT looks at the tech trends that will be driving sales in 2019

T he footprint of the home is diminishing and

there is a continuing popularity of combining the kitchen with the living space. Therefore, built-in appliances are likely to remain popular in 2019 and show strong growth in the future. This is because of the consumer’s desire to create a fluid and sleek look throughout the living space. Not only this, but the smart appliances category is becoming more significant, taking more share as connectivity is introduced to a wider choice of mid-range price segments.

Manufacturers are upping their game across the market and even at entry-level there is no compromise. Indesit Brand Manager, Sara Bazeley, says: “Indesit offers a perfectly coordinated built-in suite of cooking appliances that resonates with the needs of multitasking families, who desire functional yet stylish appliances. The Indesit Aria built-in cooking collection guarantees highly pragmatic and reliable solutions for creating the best family recipes.”

Ms Bazeley adds that appliances that feature stainless steel remain the staple choice of many; 45 per cent of consumers favour the robust and professional-style finish for their appliances, according to a 2018 Houzz UK Kitchen Trends Study.

“The future of appliances will be about style, substance and reducing resource consumption to protect the environment, in addition to making life easier for the consumer,” she continues. “This is where technology and connectivity come into play. At Indesit, we expect to see connectivity in appliances develop rapidly in the next couple of years, filtering through to more affordable areas of the market in the years to come. “We are already seeing smart technology linked

to entry-level appliances and the exclusive Indesit Turn&Cook app is a great example of this. The app recognises ingredients and recommends tasty recipes to cook using the Indesit Aria built-in oven, and is designed to take the stress out of everyday cooking. Users simply take a picture of their desired ingredient, turn their smartphone or tablet to the side and explore a selection of recipe ideas. The

app then recommends the ideal settings, and timings, for cooking perfection in one single step. “In 2019, consumers will also be on the lookout easy-to-use

straightforward controls. Indesit prides itself on developing products that ease the pressures of modern-day family life and has therefore introduced the Push&Wash function on its Innex range of washing machines – which is a one-button system that commences the laundry process without having to adjust any of the settings – and the Turn&Cook feature on its Aria range of ovens – which takes out the hassle of choosing the right cooking programme.”

A similar picture Agreeing that appliance trends will favour families looking to save time and keep household running costs to a minimum, Head of Brand at Hotpoint, Jennifer Taylor, agrees that quick wash cycles in both washing machines and dishwashers are top purchase drivers that influence sales, with this trend

continuing in 2019. However, she adds: “Appliance trends generally move at a slower pace than other industries, and it is expected that 2019 trends will be not too dissimilar from 2018. In the UK, around 10 million tonnes of food is wasted per year and a staggering 71 per cent of this is attributed to households. Consumers’ attitudes towards domestic food waste are changing and Hotpoint has developed a series of refrigeration appliances that feature its Day-1 technology, which ensures optimal storage of fresh fruit and vegetables. In addition, there is also a trend for cooling appliances that have large capacities, to accommodate more food and groceries than ever before. Flexible and adaptable storage solutions, such as adjustable refrigerator door balconies and shelves, in addition to removable freezer drawers and shelves, will ensure an enhanced capacity that is easily customised to suit consumer’s needs.” Ms Taylor explains that the energy label has also become a symbol of quality and efficiency and is a purchase driver. Sales of ‘A+++’ and higher rated appliances are surpassing sales of lesser rated models and it is therefore expected that consumers will continue to be on the lookout for appliances that benefit from the best energy ratings in 2019. When it comes to cooking, consumers continue to look for appliances that make their lives easier but it seems that some things cannot be compromised – people still want tasty food! Steve Dickson, Head of Category for Range Cooking at Glen Dimplex Home Appliances, says that this means induction hobs and cookers with easy clean functions, plus those with features that enhance the consumer’s cooking ability will continue to grow in popularity. “We will see a rising level of innovation being

applied across the range cooking sector - taking a traditional category and making it fit for the high-
