ince bringing its first refrigerator to the market almost 100 years ago, Bosch has become a leader in Cooling and well placed to take an overall view of the latest developments. Cooling
remains an essential and steadily performing category within the market and consumers continue to seek reliable and energy efficient cooling solutions for their homes. “For Bosch, freestanding models make up
around 70% of the market, with price being a real driver for many consumers. While we are seeing a lot of competition in regard to price in freestanding, particularly in bottom freezer models, there is still a large amount who will spend more given the quality and reliability is there. For example, our NoFrost models all come with a five-year warranty as standard and this is really making the difference for some people.” explains Caner Duran, Business Unit Head – Cooling at BSH Home Appliances.
A changing consumer
Influenced by changing lifestyles, energy- efficiency concerns and new design trends, what consumers are looking for in cooling appliances is constantly evolving. There has been a steady increase in consumers looking for cooling appliances with a larger capacity which allow them to store a larger variety of food and beverages. “Many consumers are choosing to purchase XXL models such as American side-by-side and four-door models. In fact, many consumers are now purchasing four-door models when replacing American side-by-side appliances. “Four-door models are growing in popularity for a number of reasons. With the fridge space being used more frequently, the four-door model makes it easier to get to the essential everyday ingredients and also gives more space for storage. They also offer a more premium style for those looking for a design uplift and consumers are happy to pay for this.”
The trend towards bigger models isn’t just
with freestanding products either, with many now looking to maximise the space available to them in their built-in kitchen. “If a consumer currently has a built-in fridge
freezer but they are looking to upgrade or replace with an XL model, it doesn’t mean they have to completely redesign their kitchen. With our range of XL built-in models, we have been able to increase fridge space without increasing the footprint of the existing built-in product. “We have been able to make use of the top shelf that is often included in a built-in fridge freezer by increasing the height of the fridge compartment. We’ve also increased the amount of litres you can fit in from 260 to 290 by reducing the size of the exterior panels in the built-in product. This is proving extremely popular with consumers.”
Energy rating Another factor that remains key in shaping consumer decisions is energy usage. This is reflected in the market which has seen an increase in the number of appliances with a high energy efficiency rating available to consumers. “In 2023, around 2% of appliances were A rated, whereas in 2024 this grew to 4%.
