PEOPLE, PLANET, PARTNERS: QUINN’S PROGRAMME MIRRORS MERCHANT PRIORITIES

Merchants continue to adapt their businesses to face their changing focus and suppliers need to match that.

A

s the industry battles with the challenges of Brexit, unprecedented pressure to provide sustainable solutions, a shift to modular housing on the horizon, sterling’s struggles against the Euro and more, merchants strive to future- proof their businesses with a changing focus. Environmental concerns continue to push sustainability to the fore and we see now more than ever the value merchants places on the people in their business and the partners they choose to work with.

Lee Gillman, sales and marketing director at Quinn Building Products says: “At Quinn, we’ve been developing an extensive People, Planet and Partners Programme which is now well-established and reflective of these current market priorities. As a supplier, it is key that we continue to develop our business to meet these changing needs, recognising that in today’s world you’ve got to walk the walk, deliver more, be better at every opportunity. So that’s what we do. And this responsibility programme is packed with initiatives to help us achieve that”.

People

Gillman believes that people are the backbone of the industry, he says. “We value the strength, skill and ingenuity of our people and are committed to the continual development of and investment in our people and the industry’s future workforce. “Our Creating Futures initiative is a comprehensive programme of training and development which includes Apprenticeship and Graduate Programmes, ongoing training and individual development paths for employees to

develop their talents and progress their careers. It includes educational partnerships with schools, colleges and universities which are vital to creating a sustainable workforce. With one award-

winning initiative gaining widespread recognition

as a leading example of a Business – Education partnership, we have followed up with the recent establishment of a new Business Insights Partnership with another local school.” The People strand of Quinn’s Programme goes beyond skills development in the business and the wider industry, he adds. “There is a very strong focus on the communities we live and work in, nurturing relationships and becoming involved in the activities which matter to the social and economic sustainability of these areas.

“This includes a large volume of local sponsorships throughout the UK to support events, sporting teams and local industry related projects. We are proud to support individual community projects which are important to the regions we operate in, through the donation of materials, expertise and finance.“

Planet

Gillman says that the drive towards net zero buildings is set to pick up pace and merchants must respond. “As suppliers, we shoulder some of the responsibility to ensure merchants can adapt to the changing demands. This means looking at more than just the finished product. The sourcing of raw materials, the

manufacturing process, the delivery logistics, the finished product and the performance within the build are responsibilities we take incredibly seriously, continuing to adapt and innovate, investing in research and development and assessing and improving every single stage of the process. “We produce products with strong environmental credentials, have developed our unique mixed loads delivery solutions and continue to invest in the adoption of lean manufacturing principles across our business. We’re contributing to the circular economy through the use of alternative fuels, ensuring minimum waste through recycling a large portion of our by-products in our production processes, and investing in research to find ways to reuse and recycle the remaining waste products.”

Gillman says that part of Quinn’s responsibility programme includes a range of biodiversity and heritage initiatives which aim to preserve and protect the integrity of the unique space where facilities are based. This includes working with conservation bodies, historical and heritage groups and local authorities to not only protect the rich landscape around us, but also to help protected species of flora and fauna thrive. “On the partners side, we’re very focused on the supply chain, responsible sourcing and making sure that our mixed loads delivery solution gives the best possible opportunity for our customers to reduce their carbon footprint. “We’re very committed to supporting our partners through innovation and support.” he continues. “This has involved introducing new product lines and investing in the development of our digital Delivery Hub and merchant app, Genius by Quinn. Merchants are provided with expert technical support and training through a blend of digital resources and face to face training delivery to equip our customers with the right knowledge and support to give them a commercial advantage.” BMJ
