GLASSWARE Knowing your consumer

From the savvy shopper to the conscious consumer, Alexander Blyth, UK marketing manager at LMFV highlights how glassware manufacturer Duralex is catering to consumer trends.

Trend alert

When it comes to interior design, we’re continuing to see consumers tap into past industry trends, with a nostalgic 70s design proving to be extremely popular with interior decor. One aspect of this trend that is spearheading the vintage resurgence is mustard glassware, and our Duralex Amber Versailles glass mugs sit within this trend perfectly. Some trends that we’re seeing in the industry stem from the ‘houseproud’ aesthetically pleasing table dressings. An influx of home and interior influencers has paved the way for the latest trend, specifically mustard glassware. Duralex has a wide range of products, varying from the coloured Picardie glasses to the Lys plates and mugs. There’s nostalgia attached to these products; from the vintage design of some collections to its sturdy structure, many consumers will be familiar with Duralex glassware. Duralex sells a variety of classic glassware varieties, dinnerware, hot drinks glasses and drinkware and coloured glasses. This year, there will be a big push for the glass storage containers which are microwave and dishwasher friendly, as are all Duralex products.

The savvy shopper A consumer trend that we’re seeing more often in the industry is that of the ‘savvy shopper’. The cost-of-living crisis has forced consumers to become a nation of thrifty money savers and list makers. Duralex is catering to the savvy shopper with glassware available from a range of retailers, including John Lewis, Wayfair, which has a partnership with Klarna, as well as Ocado and Rinkit, with prices starting from just £7. When it comes to glassware, products that are durable and long- lasting, good value for money and remain stylish when creating a table scaping aesthetic are what will entice consumers.

The conscious consumer The pandemic shook everyone and consumers looked to recognisable heritage brands, both for nostalgia – looking back on memories pre- Covid – and brands that have been with them for a long time. Duralex has been manufacturing highly resistant, 100% recyclable, tempered

glassware products for more than 80 years in the heart of France. Our incomparable tempered glass products have always stood the test of time thanks to the shock resistant functionality of the glassware. It is this process that makes Duralex products so tough, versatile, and suitable for everyone, for every day and forever. Today more than ever, it has its place on our tables, it has become a real reference. Consumers are increasingly more conscious of what they’re buying,

where they’re buying it from and how it’s made. We’re proud to be a brand that values CSR and sustainability. All of the components to make the glasses are locally sourced to the Duralex factory, and 95% of suppliers are local – reducing overall mileage and energy consumption. All our glass is recyclable - something we’ve noticed more brands shifting towards as consumers become more conscious than ever about their purchases. While eco-credentials really do make a difference for shoppers, aesthetic is still just as important to them. People are searching for timeless designs and pops of colour to fit in with modern and stylish kitchens and dining spaces. This is why we introduced coloured glassware, to suit different trends and times of the year. They’re also high-quality and mass tinted so the colour runs right the way through the glass.

What’s next? Duralex uses trade fairs such as Spring Fair to establish the needs of traders and consumers, as well as product availability and bestsellers. From the 2023 Spring Fair, we established that the tinted coloured glassware was extremely popular so this will be something that we consider for further product developments. As not all Duralex products are available in the UK, it’s important that we understand the needs and wants of our consumers. We continuously seek feedback on the types of products they want to be able to purchase. Thanks to the responses we receive at trade shows and via social media, we are able to continually grow and develop our brand in the UK to provide the highest quality durable glassware that epitomises style and sophistication.
