THE RISE OF AI AND THE NEED FOR ACCURATE DATA

ensuring that AI-generated content and solutions are accurate, reliable, and truly representative of reality.

W 86

How can we do this? The answer, as always, lies with data. The old saying “garbage in, garbage out” holds true – if we do not train AI with high-quality data, the accuracy of what it generates will be poor. And if the data is not diverse and wide-ranging enough, the results will be flawed as they will reflect and perpetuate stereotypes and bias. There are also important sustainability considerations surrounding AI that cannot be ignored. For example, GPT-3, the first public- release model of popular AI-chatbot ChatGPT, was estimated to have consumed 936 megawatt-hours during its training – enough energy to power a single electric car to the moon and back more than six times. Obviously, this kind of energy intensity is not sustainable or scalable.

Accurate data helps to identify and mitigate against bias, promote fairness, and ensure that AI is used in an ethical manner. Without it, users will not be able to build trust in AI systems, which is essential if the wider world is going to accept and adopt AI- based applications.

ith artificial intelligence (AI) making headlines around the world, it is important to remember that humans still have a major part to play in

Calibration is essential to ensure accurate data, shares Mona-Lisa Grannas, marketing director, Beamex. “With properly calibrated instruments, measurements can be proven to be accurate, trustworthy, and repeatable. Beamex has been a leading provider of calibration solutions for over 40 years, helping to make the world a safer and less uncertain place and improving the efficiency of companies worldwide.”

AI has the potential to revolutionise many industries – including healthcare and manufacturing – by driving down costs, increasing accuracy, and improving accessibility. Accurate data forms the foundation for effective and reliable AI systems – and the strength of this foundation relies on calibration.
