McDonald’s trials plastic-free packaging

u McDonald’s has announced a programme to remove and minimise plastic and improve recyclability in packaging across Europe. The packaging trials form part


of McDonald’s global ‘Better M’ platform, which aims to implement environmentally positive changes across McDonald’s sustainable packaging and recycling supply chain as well as the customer experience. Selected restaurants across Europe


will serve as testing grounds. The feedback collected will inform which options are scaled up or adapted. The model allows conald’s to nd the sustainable solutions customers want. Currently, 88 per cent of packaging


used by McDonald’s in Europe is made from bre. The planned changes are  More than 1,200 tonnes of plastic per year will be saved through a modication of cFlurry packaging that eliminates the need for a plastic lid. This change will be fully implemented across Europe by the end of 2020

 McDonald’s Germany is currently piloting a programme called ReCup, where customers can ask for a reusable coffee cup and return it at participating restaurants to be cleaned and reused


 UK customers can return used Happy Meal toys to a select number of restaurants so they can be recycled in a new toy take-back trial


 In the Netherlands, restaurants offer recycled paper masks with Happy eals instead of balloons. Following great feedback, Belgium is now doing the same

These announcements demonstrate


action towards McDonald’s global Scale for Good commitments, which launched in 2018 and include an ambition to source all guest packaging from renewable, recycled or certied sources by . Today, McDonald’s is approximately 60 per cent of the way towards achieving this goal globally.
