BERKELEY SUPPORTS: FRANCHISE HEROES Five minutes with...

Berkeley Harris, former franchisor, current franchisee, ex-Royal Marine, alleged Brad Pitt doppelganger and ardent Brucie fan

THE ROYALS: BERKELEY'S A FAN

How did you start out? My parents were business owners, so from a young age I observed the benefi ts – and the headaches! Avoiding the business world, I later joined the Royal Marines and had 10 years of fun, including close protection of the royal family and serving in Northern Ireland and the fi rst Gulf confl ict. Since then I have been a franchisee, franchisor and then franchisee again, plus I had the pleasure of serving as deputy chairman on the bfa board of directors. I now run my own franchise with Sandler, and have been awarded franchisee of the year for 2019.

BRAD PITT IT'S UNCANNY:

Who’s your business hero? No business heroes as such but comedy heroes: Laurel and Hardy, Tommy Cooper, Jack Black and Bruce Forsyth – of the latter I have a full-size cardboard cut out. Ask me in private how I got it!

How do you relax? We have an apartment in Spain that I love visiting. Other than that – watching fi lms. Perhaps it’s surprising as a former Royal Marine, but I cry easily at many of them!

Tell us a little-known fact about you… I support the Royal British Legion and was invited to be Parade Commander for the First World War centenary in 2018.

What guests would you invite to your fantasy dinner party? Trump – as I think we need a word with him, then he can leave. Lee Evans, Keith Lemon (who can sit next to Donald), Gino D’Acampo, the Queen (I am a fan of the royals), Holly Willoughby, plus Ken Barlow and his son Gary.

Who’d play you in the fi lm of your life? Brad Pitt – as we’re often mistaken for one another. I’m okay with it but I know it annoys him.

How would you like to be remembered? On a serious note, I thrive on making a difference, hence giving back is important to me. So I’d like to be remembered as the fun family chap who worked hard in his career and also outside of work to help others where he could. If you needed someone to step up – Berkeley would do it.

One piece of advice you’d give to anyone starting out in business? Don’t get in your own way! Business is tough enough without self-limiting beliefs. Don’t regret what you do, regret what you don’t do.
