Ask the expert s
What questions should I ask a fra nchisor?
IAN C HRI S TEL OW Co-founder of ActionCOACH
u When you’ve shortlisted your franchise opportunities, these are the top three questions I recommend:
1. Have you participated in the annual Smith & Henderson Franchisee Satisfaction Survey? Most reputable UK franchises enter because they want to learn and improve. The results show how the people who matter most rate the brands you are considering. You can therefore benchmark them against one another on areas most important to you – such as training and ongoing support.
2. Are you happy to provide me with the contact details of every UK franchise owner in your network? The best way to evaluate a franchise is to speak to those who already own one. Think about speaking to those who have recently started so you understand what the initial training is like now, established franchisees who can tell you if they still
feel valued, and franchisees who are at the point in their business where you aspire to be in 12 to 24 months’ time. Also, speak to struggling franchisees in case the franchise is actually not for you. It’s important you get a balanced view and work out whether your own attitudinal qualities and skills lend themselves to the franchise.
3. How will I get my fi rst clients? If you want to fast-track your way to making a good income, check if the franchisor supports you in fi nding new customers. For example, at ActionCOACH we have over 3,500 strategies and tactics to help business-owner clients grow their business, and our franchise partners use some of them during a week of hands- on training so they have prospect meetings lined up before they offi cially launch. We also have professional salespeople who can attend your prospect meetings on a no win, no fee basis.
